SUMMARY :
The Senior Production / Engineering Technician is a highly skilled, hands-on technical position responsible for supporting Production, Engineering, Quality, and Customer Service activities within a highly engineered laser manufacturing environment. The position has primary responsibility for the evaluation, troubleshooting, testing, and disposition support of customer Return Material Authorizations (RMAs), including defect analysis, root-cause investigation, repair, and verification testing. The position will also be cross trained to perform most of the production assembly, alignment, testing, and calibration functions and will provide technical support to Engineering on new product development, first article analysis, yield improvement, product qualification, and production troubleshooting. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with complex electro-optical and electro-mechanical products, interpreting test data, troubleshooting equipment and products, identifying failure modes, and working independently to resolve technical issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities:
Customer RMA / Failure Analysis Own and manage the technical evaluation of customer RMAs from receipt through completion. Perform detailed inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and failure analysis of returned products. Identify, document, and characterize product defects and failure modes. Determine whether failures are related to workmanship, component performance, assembly, alignment, test methodology, or other product-related issues. Repair, rework, adjust, align, and retest returned products as appropriate. Perform root-cause analysis and document findings in a clear and concise manner. Provide technical feedback to Engineering, Quality, Production, and other appropriate functions regarding recurring or significant failures. Identify opportunities to eliminate recurring RMA issues through improvements to product design, manufacturing processes, testing, or work instructions. Maintain accurate RMA records, test results, failure information, and repair documentation. Become proficient in most of the Production assembly, alignment, testing, calibration, and inspection processes. Build, test, troubleshoot, adjust, align, and calibrate laser products, components, and electro-mechanical assemblies. Support Production in resolving complex technical issues and product failures. Assist with production yield improvement by identifying, analyzing, and documenting failure trends. Troubleshoot test equipment, fixtures, power supplies, measurement systems, and other production equipment. Perform electro-mechanical disassembly and reassembly while maintaining product and process requirements. Support production as needed during periods of increased workload, staffing constraints, or technical challenges. Provide technical assistance and informal training to other production personnel as appropriate. Engineering Support Support Engineering in the development, testing, and introduction of new products. Perform testing and characterization of prototype and production-intent products. Support first article inspections and analysis, including collection and documentation of product performance data. Assist Engineering with product qualification, customer qualification, and vendor qualification testing. Support engineering investigations involving product failures, process issues, and yield degradation. Collect, analyze, and report test data to support engineering decisions. Assist with development and validation of test methods, fixtures, and equipment. Help identify opportunities to improve product performance, manufacturability, reliability, and test efficiency. Assist with development and maintenance of product specifications, test procedures, work instructions, and other technical documentation. Testing and Technical Analysis Understand product performance parameters, specifications, and associated test methodologies. Set up and operate test stations and measurement equipment. Verify and record product performance results accurately and consistently. Apply knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, optics, mechanics, and electro-mechanical systems to troubleshoot products and test processes. Analyze test data and identify trends, abnormalities, and potential causes of failures. Develop and maintain clear and accurate test documentation and reports. Perform unit adjustment, alignment, calibration, and verification testing as required. Complete all work in accordance with established procedures, quality standards, and safety requirements. Documentation and Process Improvement Create, edit, and improve work instructions, test procedures, troubleshooting guides, and other manufacturing documentation. Ensure technical findings and process changes are properly documented. Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, test methods, product quality, and overall efficiency. Participate in structured problem-solving activities, including root-cause analysis, yield analysis, and corrective action activities. Support continuous improvement initiatives across Production, Engineering, and Quality.
CROSS-TRAINING
The Senior Production / Engineering Technician is expected to become proficient in most of the company's production and technical functions, including, as applicable: Electro-optical and electro-mechanical assembly Laser alignment and adjustment Product testing and calibration Optical inspection and measurement Electronics and power supply testing Troubleshooting and repair Final inspection and product verification First article inspection and testing Production test equipment operation RMA evaluation and repair Failure analysis and yield analysis Manufacturing documentation and work instructions
SUPERVISORY / LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct supervisory responsibilities. May provide technical direction, training, and assistance to production personnel and other technicians as appropriate.
EQUIPMENT UTILIZED
Frequent use of laser test equipment, power supplies, electrical and optical measurement equipment, oscilloscopes, multimeters, optical measurement systems, computers, production test stations, alignment equipment, hand tools, and electro-mechanical assembly equipment. EDUCATION / TRAINING / WORK-RELATED EXPERIENCE
Associate degree or technical school training in electronics, electrical engineering technology, electro-mechanical technology, optics, photonics, or a related technical field preferred. Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical experience in a manufacturing, engineering, electronics, optics, photonics, laser, or electro-mechanical environment preferred. Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience will be considered. Experience working with highly engineered, low-volume/high-mix products is highly desirable. Experience with laser, optical, photonic, electronic, or precision electro-mechanical products is strongly preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret technical documents, engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, work instructions, and procedure manuals in English language. Ability to write clear technical reports, RMA findings, test results, and routine correspondence in English language. Ability to effectively communicate technical information in one-on-one and small-group situations with Production, Engineering, Quality, and other employees in English language.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply basic and intermediate mathematical concepts to routinely encounter technical situations. Ability to obtain and interpret quantitative results from test and measurement equipment. Ability to interpret graphical data and reduce larger data sets to graphical form. Familiarity with basic statistical concepts and yield analysis is desirable.
REASONING / PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY
Ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems using a systematic approach. Ability to identify relationships between symptoms, test results, failure modes, and potential root causes. Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or technical form. Ability to deal effectively with problems involving multiple variables and determine appropriate next steps with limited supervision. Demonstrated ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned technical problems.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Electronics technician certification or other relevant technical certification preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills. Ability to work with precision electro-optical and electro-mechanical assemblies. Ability to use electrical and optical test and measurement equipment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality. Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation. Ability to learn new products, processes, and technologies quickly. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple technical assignments. Proficient computer skills, including the ability to record, analyze, and communicate technical data. Experience with ERP/MRP or manufacturing systems is a plus. Experience with structured problem-solving methodologies such as 5-Why, Fishbone, DMAIC, or similar approaches is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work effectively across Production, Engineering, Quality, and Customer Service functions.
