JOB PURPOSE
The Quality Lab Engineer provides engineering support for laboratory quality systems, testing methods, technical investigations, and continuous improvement activities to ensure accurate, reliable, and compliant laboratory operations. The role applies engineering principles and technical judgment to maintain laboratory standards, resolve testing and quality issues, and support manufacturing and customer requirements.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Engineering & Technical Support (25%) Provides engineering support for laboratory testing, inspections, technical evaluations, and problem solving in support of manufacturing and customer requirements. Applies engineering principles, specifications, test methods, and laboratory data to evaluate results and resolve routine to moderately complex technical issues. Laboratory Quality Systems & Documentation (25%) Develops, revises, validates, and maintains laboratory procedures, work instructions, forms, test methods, validation reports, and other controlled documentation. Reviews changes to applicable standards, specifications, and customer requirements and updates laboratory documentation to support continued compliance with ISO/IEC 17025, Nadcap MTL, and other applicable requirements. Test Method Development & Validation (20%) Develops, evaluates, and validates laboratory test methods and equipment to improve testing capability, accuracy, reliability, and efficiency. Conducts technical studies, analyzes results, documents conclusions, and supports implementation of approved methods and equipment changes. Technical Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement (15%) Investigates laboratory testing issues, product failures, and process concerns using data analysis and established root-cause methodologies. Develops or supports corrective and preventive actions and identifies opportunities to improve laboratory methods, performance, quality, and efficiency. Audit, Accreditation & Quality Planning Support (15%) Supports customer, internal, certification, and Nadcap audits through preparation, participation, documentation, audit responses, and corrective action follow-up. Maintains required Nadcap MTL documentation and contributes to quality planning and technical activities such as APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, MSA, and process capability studies as applicable. Who You Are
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and directly related professional experience. Two to four years of relevant laboratory, quality, materials, manufacturing, or engineering experience. Experience in a manufacturing, laboratory, or similar technical environment preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of engineering principles and laboratory testing practices applicable to materials or manufacturing environments. Working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, Nadcap MTL, and applicable customer or laboratory quality requirements. Ability to develop and maintain technical procedures, test methods, validation documentation, and controlled records. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, standards, procedures, and test methods. Ability to analyze laboratory and process data and apply sound technical judgment to routine and moderately complex problems. Working knowledge of root-cause analysis, statistical methods, and continuous improvement tools. Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, MSA, and process capability methods. Strong technical writing, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively across Laboratory, Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing functions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and applicable laboratory or engineering systems.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in laboratory, manufacturing, and office environments. The role regularly requires presence in laboratory and production areas where exposure to industrial equipment, chemicals, elevated temperatures, noise, and other manufacturing conditions may occur. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required in designated areas.
