Provide metallurgical and related technical support to the organization. Develop methods with the launch of new products to improve foundry processes and product quality. Direct research projects to reduce scrap and improve cost per unit. Conduct tests, investigations in problem areas, train, test and certify others in metallurgical processes.
Essential Functions:
Assist management in the metallurgical test functions for the operation by working with other technical staff in planning testing, evaluation of test results and investigation of test failures At the direction of the director of quality and/or the VP of engineering, assist and coordinate training, evaluation and qualification of test lab personnel to run equipment, preparation of necessary work instructions related to the test lab operation Support defect evaluations Assist with research on scrap and cost reductions Work with other technical staff to develop melting and heat treating processes to obtain desired characteristics such as strength, ductility and hardness Establish and refine melt practices for the operation, at the direction of the director of quality Perform any and all other job related tasks as assigned
Skills or Experience Required:
B.S. degree in chemistry or equivalent (such as metallurgical engineering) is required. Must have a minimum of six (6) months experience with spectrometer use and a minimum of three (3) years related experience in a manufacturing setting.
Other Position Demands or Requirements:
Must know and readily understand Aluminum cast alloys and understand microstructure of castings. Knowledge of sand processing and heat treat is required. Must possess strong professional communication skills in both written and oral form. Must be detail-oriented and able to follow-up on processes in a timely and accurate manner.
Working Conditions:
Works in climate controlled office 50% of time. Rest of time is spent working in the plant, exposed to heat, dust, fumes and noise. Must be able to walk, stand, reach and bend without restrictions. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Will be required to wear OSHA mandated safety gear while in plant (ear plugs, safety shoes, safety glasses at minimum).
