Job Description

Tooling Design Engineer A well-established manufacturing organization is seeking an experienced Tooling Design Engineer to support its foundry and heavy manufacturing operations. This position will be responsible for the design, development, modification, and continuous improvement of tooling used throughout casting production. The Tooling Design Engineer will develop 3D tooling models for patterns, core boxes, gating systems, risers, and related production tooling. The role will support a variety of molding and core-making processes and will work closely with manufacturing teams to improve tooling performance, casting quality, dimensional consistency, and overall process efficiency. Key Responsibilities Design and develop patterns, core boxes, gating systems, risers, fixtures, and other tooling used in metal casting operations Create and modify 3D tooling models and associated engineering documentation Support tooling for both horizontal and vertical molding processes Develop tooling for hot-box, cold-box, and other core-making applications Evaluate gating, risering, filling, and solidification characteristics to improve casting quality and yield Utilize casting simulation software such as MAGMASOFT, NovaCast, or similar programs to identify and resolve potential process issues Manage engineering changes, tooling revisions, and continuous improvement activities Coordinate tooling builds, repairs, modifications, vendor quotations, and outside tooling resources Provide technical support during sample runs, new product launches, tooling trials, and production validation Troubleshoot tooling and casting-related issues and assist with root-cause analysis Partner with production, manufacturing engineering, quality, maintenance, process engineering, and other operational teams Support cost reduction, scrap reduction, productivity, and tooling-life improvement initiatives Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related technical discipline 3+ years of tooling design, tooling engineering, or related manufacturing engineering experience Previous experience within a foundry, metalcasting, or heavy manufacturing environment Strong understanding of patterns, core boxes, gating, risering, and casting processes Experience designing tooling using 3D CAD software Familiarity with casting simulation software such as MAGMASOFT, NovaCast, or equivalent is preferred Experience with cast iron, ductile iron, or similar ferrous casting processes is strongly preferred Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on manufacturing problem-solving ability Ability to manage multiple tooling projects, engineering changes, and production priorities Strong communication and cross-functional project coordination skills This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on engineer with strong tooling, foundry, and casting experience to take ownership of tooling design projects while contributing to improvements in manufacturing performance, casting quality, and production efficiency. $90,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
