Job Description

HOB Industries | Cheshire, CT | Full-Time About the Opportunity HOB Industries is looking for a mechanically inclined engineer interested in developing a career in precision toolmaking, progressive die tooling, and high-speed metal stamping. This is not a traditional desk engineering position. We're looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things work, solving mechanical problems, and working with their hands. Whether you're a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate, an early-career engineer looking for more hands-on experience, or someone with an engineering background interested in becoming a skilled toolmaker, we want to hear from you. Our goal is to develop the next generation of highly skilled toolmakers who combine engineering knowledge with practical manufacturing expertise. What You'll Do You'll work alongside experienced toolmakers, machinists, and engineers to learn how precision stamping tools are designed, manufactured, assembled, maintained, and improved.
Responsibilities and training opportunities include:
Building, assembling, maintaining, and repairing precision progressive stamping dies Learning precision machining, surface grinding, CNC machining, and Wire EDM Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T Troubleshooting mechanical problems in tooling and high-speed stamping operations Manufacturing and fitting precision tool components Supporting tool design and engineering modifications using SolidWorks Working directly with production to diagnose tooling issues and improve performance Developing an understanding of die clearances, material behavior, tool steels, and precision manufacturing Participating in tooling improvements to increase production rates, reliability, and tool life Taking increasing ownership of tooling projects as your skills develop You'll have opportunities to follow projects from initial design through machining, assembly, troubleshooting, and production. Who We're Looking For We're particularly interested in candidates with: A bachelor's or associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline Strong mechanical aptitude and an interest in hands-on manufacturing An understanding of mechanical design, tolerances, and engineering drawings A willingness to learn machining, precision fitting, grinding, and toolmaking techniques Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail An interest in developing practical skills alongside experienced tradespeople Preferred, but not required: Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software Exposure to machining, CNC equipment, or precision manufacturing Familiarity with GD&T and precision measurement Experience with metal stamping, progressive dies, or tool and die manufacturing Personal experience building, repairing, or modifying mechanical equipment Prior toolmaking experience is not required. We are willing to train the right candidate. Why Join HOB Industries? At HOB, our toolmakers and engineers work side by side. We believe the best technical professionals understand not only how to design something, but how to manufacture it, troubleshoot it, and make it better. You'll benefit from: Direct mentorship from experienced toolmakers, machinists, and engineers Hands-on experience with precision manufacturing equipment and tooling Opportunities to develop both engineering and skilled-trade expertise Exposure to the entire manufacturing process, from concept through production Meaningful responsibility and opportunities for long-term professional growth A collaborative environment within an established, family-owned manufacturing company This is an opportunity to develop a specialized and valuable skill set that combines the analytical abilities of a mechanical engineer with the practical expertise of a precision toolmaker. Interested? If you're an engineer who would rather be building, machining, troubleshooting, and improving mechanical systems than spending every day behind a computer, we'd like to meet you. We welcome applications from recent graduates, early-career engineers, and mechanically inclined individuals looking to build a long-term career in precision toolmaking. Come learn how to design it, build it, make it work, and make it better.
