As a Engineering Equipment Operor (WG-08) your duties may include but are not limited to the following: Operes bulldozers, excavors, graders, skid steers, backhoes, loaders, farm tractors, ORUVs, and other heavy equipment to support land-management projects such as culvert replacement, levee repair, ditch cleaning, trail construction, mowing, and maintaining refuge roads and parking areas. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, agricultural tractors, vehicles, small engines, and tachments, including replacing hoses, belts, chains, filters, radiors, hydraulic components, tracks, bucket teeth, and diagnosing issues using test lamps, multimeters, onboard computers, and electronic analyzers. Works daily with refuge staff, volunteers, and small project teams to complete land-management, earth-moving, and habit restorion projects; provides mentoring or serves as a safety instructor in equipment operion. Performs building and facility maintenance including electrical repairs, HVAC servicing, plumbing system installion/repair, masonry, carpentry, welding, concrete work, roofing, painting, and general structural maintenance across refuge facilities. Ensures safe operion of equipment and compliance with safety regulions by conducting inspections, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, using approprie PPE, handling and disposing hazardous merials properly, and developing safe work approaches for land-management projects. Maintains equipment logbooks and input service, repair, and maintenance records into the Service's approved maintenance dabase; keeps written documention current for all opered equipment. Applies herbicides and insecticides for pest management using trailer, backpack, and hand sprayers; follows product labels, regulory requirements, and proper disposal procedures for surplus chemicals and containers. Physical Demands:
Considerable physical effort is required in the operion of the equipment and tachments and in performing maintenance of facilities, equipment, and tachments. Considerable strain can be caused by the constant vibrion of the equipment and the jolting received from operion of the equipment over rough surfaces. Locion of the controls and tachments frequently requires working in awkward or strained positions. Physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to opere the equipment and tachments. Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%).
