Salisbury, MA Position Summary We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team designing custom glovebox systems and related laboratory and process equipment. This position is well suited for an engineer who enjoys practical mechanical design and seeing projects progress from initial customer requirements through fabrication, assembly, and final production. The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing mechanical designs based on customer and project requirements, creating detailed fabrication drawings and Bills of Materials, selecting and sourcing components, and supporting projects throughout fabrication and assembly. Because our equipment is primarily custom-designed, this role involves more than modifying standard products. The engineer will regularly work through new mechanical arrangements, component integration challenges, fabrication requirements, and customer-specific design considerations. Designs will initially be developed with support and review from experienced team members. As familiarity with our products, processes, and engineering standards develops, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be expected to take increasing ownership of projects and make independent design decisions. Key Responsibilities Design custom glovebox systems and related equipment based on customer requirements, sales documentation, specifications, and project requirements. Develop complete 3D CAD assemblies and detailed fabrication drawings for sheet-metal, welded, machined, and other manufactured components. Evaluate designs for functionality, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, component accessibility, clearances, and overall mechanical integration. Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials for assigned projects. Select purchased components and obtain quotations for new, custom, or fabricated parts. Enter and maintain part and supplier information within the company's ERP system. Prepare final system drawings, installation requirements, delivery questionnaires, and other required project documentation. Review and interpret applicable customer specifications, engineering standards, and project requirements in coordination with the engineering team, and incorporate applicable requirements into equipment designs. Work closely with Project Management and Production throughout the design and manufacturing process. Review feedback from Production and implement appropriate design changes to resolve fabrication and assembly issues and improve manufacturability. Assist in reviewing nonconforming or problematic incoming components and coordinate with suppliers when engineering input or corrective action is required. Participate in internal design reviews and, with experience, communicate directly with customers regarding technical requirements and design decisions. Support continuous improvement of designs, engineering practices, and manufacturing documentation. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field preferred. Candidates with substantial relevant mechanical design experience in lieu of a four-year engineering degree will also be considered. 2-5 years of relevant mechanical design or engineering experience preferred. Experience designing sheet-metal components, weldments, and fabricated mechanical assemblies. Experience creating detailed fabrication and manufacturing drawings. Proficiency with 3D parametric CAD software; SolidWorks experience is strongly preferred. Practical understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes and design for manufacturability and assembly. Working knowledge of engineering drawings, tolerances, fits, fasteners, and mechanical assembly. Experience creating and maintaining Bills of Materials. Strong organizational, computer, and documentation skills. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple custom projects and changing design requirements. Ability to communicate effectively with Engineering, Project Management, Production, suppliers, and customers. Additional Experience That Is Valuable The following experience is beneficial but not required: Stainless-steel fabrication and welding Custom machinery, laboratory equipment, or process equipment design Machined component design Piping, tubing, vacuum, pressure, or process systems Familiarity with electrical and controls systems as they relate to mechanical equipment integration ERP/MRP systems, including SAGE Supplier and fabrication vendor coordination Engineering calculations or analysis used to support mechanical design decisions Interpretation and application of engineering codes, standards, and customer specifications What the Role Offers Our equipment is primarily custom-designed, giving engineers the opportunity to work on complete systems rather than a narrow portion of a larger product. Engineers can follow their designs from initial requirements and CAD development through fabrication, assembly, testing, and completion. The position involves regular interaction with the people who fabricate and assemble the equipment. This provides direct feedback on designs and an opportunity to develop practical knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication, equipment integration, and design for assembly. As experience with our equipment and engineering practices develops, the successful candidate will be given increasing responsibility for project design and technical decision-making. Work Environment and Schedule This is a full-time, hourly, on-site position. Regular interaction with Production and direct access to equipment during fabrication and assembly are important aspects of the role.
Normal Schedule:
Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Travel is not a regular requirement of the position. Occasional travel may be required based on project needs. Physical Requirements Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods. Ability to periodically stand, walk, bend, crouch, and reach while reviewing equipment and assemblies in a manufacturing environment. Ability to visually inspect mechanical components, fabricated parts, and assembled equipment. Ability to safely work in and navigate a manufacturing and assembly environment.
