Mechanical Engineer - Test Fixture Design & Manufacturing

Job Description

Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end design, development, and documentation of manufacturing test fixtures that support product quality assurance and production efficiency. You will work closely with manufacturing, quality, and product engineering teams to translate requirements into robust, repeatable test solutions. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer, comfortable getting involved on the shop floor as well as at the design desk. They must be comfortable with both 3D printing design and fabrication, highly proficient in FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD tools, and have a proven track record of delivering complete engineering packages that include 2D drawings and supporting technical documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Test Fixture Design & Development Conceptualize, design, and develop manufacturing test fixtures from initial requirement through to production-ready solution, with direct hands-on involvement at every stage. Create detailed 3D models of fixtures, jigs, and tooling using FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD software. Apply comfort with 3D printing design and fabrication to produce prototypes and functional fixture components. Select appropriate materials, fasteners, and off-the-shelf components to meet durability, cost, and lead-time requirements. Validate fixture designs through physical prototyping, functional testing, and iterative refinement. Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure fixtures meet gauge repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) requirements. 2D Engineering Drawings & Documentation Produce fully dimensioned, toleranced 2D engineering drawings in accordance with GD&T standards (ISO/ASME as applicable). Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, and detail part drawings. Author Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), design review records, and design history documentation. Maintain a well-organized engineering filing system ensuring full traceability of design revisions. Produce test reports, fixture validation records, and operator instruction documents to support manufacturing hand-over. 3D Printing Design & Fabrication Design and fabricate test fixtures and components using 3D printing technology. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Apply electromechanical knowledge when designing fixtures that incorporate sensors, actuators, or electrical interfaces, working with electronics engineers where required. Participate in design reviews, FMEA sessions, and root cause analysis activities. Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities to reduce fixture build time, cost, and complexity. Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on design best practice. Support Health & Safety compliance; ensure all fixture designs meet applicable safety standards.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential Bachelor's degree (BEng / BSc) or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Minimum 5 years of demonstrable hands-on experience in mechanical design, with a focus on test fixture or tooling design in a manufacturing environment. A hands-on approach is essential — the successful candidate must be willing and able to physically build, assemble, and validate fixtures, not solely design at a computer. Proficiency in FreeCAD or equivalent parametric 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor). Comfortable with 3D printing design and fabrication, including designing parts for additive manufacture and operating FDM and/or resin-based printing equipment. Strong competency in producing 2D engineering drawings with full GD&T annotations to ISO or ASME standards. Experience authoring engineering documentation including BOMs, ECNs, test reports, and design history files. Solid understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, injection moulding) and design-for-manufacture (DFM) principles. Some exposure to electromechanical systems is required — the candidate should be comfortable working with fixtures and assemblies that incorporate both mechanical and basic electrical/electronic elements such as sensors, actuators, connectors, and wiring harnesses. Desirable Experience in an
ISO 9001
quality management environment. Knowledge of electrical/electronic test fixture design (bed-of-nails, PCB test fixtures). Exposure to FMEA, PPAP, or APQP processes. Familiarity with PLM or PDM systems (e.g. Windchill, Vault, FreeCAD's built-in project tools). Experience with multi-material 3D printing and production-grade additive manufacturing materials (e.g. Nylon PA12, PEEK, carbon-filled composites).
Skills & Competencies:
Technical Skills Parametric 3D CAD (FreeCAD / equivalent) 3D printing design & fabrication (FDM, SLA, SLS) 2D Drafting & GD&T (ISO/ASME) Engineering documentation & change control Design for additive manufacture (DfAM) Electromechanical systems & integration Material selection & mechanical analysis Metrology & fixture validation Personal Attributes Methodical with strong attention to detail Self-motivated and able to manage own workload Effective communicator across all levels Collaborative team player Problem-solver with a practical mindset Committed to quality and continuous improvement Adaptable in a fast-paced environment
