AFSIM Modeling & Simulation Engineer (R&D Engineer 3)
Job Description
What You Will Do The Engineering and Technology Maturation (ETM) organization is looking for R D Engineers with direct AFSIM experience to support the ETM Program Office by providing technical leadership in advanced modeling, simulation, and analysis for ETM at LANL and for the broader DOE community. The ETM Program resides under the Associate Laboratory Director for Weapon Physics (ALDX) and conducts research to improve America's ability to rapidly design, produce, qualify, and certify nuclear weapons. The main goals of ETM are to 1) Develop, mature, and integrate technologies and capabilities for the future nuclear deterrent 2) Build and test prototypes and apply lessons learned to future activities & 3) Rapidly bring proven technologies, capabilities, and prototypes together to address urgent and future nuclear deterrence needs. To that end, ETM is focused on developing modeling and simulation tools, testing capabilities, weapon technologies, materials, explosives and surveillance methods for weapon systems to assure production, qualification and certification in the absence of underground nuclear testing.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Skills :
For this role you will need direct, hands-on experience with AFSIM, including scripting, modeling, and behavior development, as evidenced by programmatic contributions and/or recognition within the modeling and simulation community. Additionally, you must possess a strong understanding of CONOPS, mission analysis, and tactics development, with demonstrated success in both performing and leading complex analytical endeavors.
Engineering Expertise :
Demonstrated experience building and validating models of sensors, weapons, communications, and space systems within AFSIM. Demonstrated success with developing technical approaches and new methods for running and analyzing large-scale simulations and project execution.
Teamwork/Communications :
To succeed in this role, you must have the ability to facilitate successful teamwork and consensus building across organizational and program boundaries. This includes excellent interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by successful internal and external interactions through briefings, presentations, and writings.
Additional Job Requirements:
Thorough knowledge of and experience in multi-disciplinary engineering disciplines. Thorough knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects. Ability to execute modeling and simulation activities with minimal to no oversight. Ability to develop advanced models for unique mission sets. Provide insightful recommendations based on findings back to project teams. Present findings and recommendations to senior level leaders.
Education/Experience :
Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications :
Proficiency in C++ and Python. Experience supporting operational efforts through M&S development. Experience working with large-scale distributed simulations. Experience running and analyzing campaign and/or theater-level simulations. Active Q Clearance. Active Sigma 15. Active SCI Clearance.
Work Location :
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance :
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements
• for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
•Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test :
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer. Regular position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
