Job Description

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Tooling Engineering Technician to join our engineering and manufacturing team. This position is responsible for designing and developing precision tooling, dies, fixtures, and inspection gages to support metal stamping and machining operations. The ideal candidate will have strong 2D and 3D CAD design capabilities, experience with parametric modeling, and a practical understanding of tooling design, CNC programming, and manufacturing processes. This hands-on technical role works closely with Engineering, Machine Shop, Die Assembly, and Press Room personnel to develop production-ready tooling, troubleshoot existing designs, and improve manufacturing efficiency and product quality. Key Responsibilities Tooling Design & Engineering Design and develop stamping dies, tooling components, fixtures, inspection gages, and detailed manufacturing drawings. Create 3D models, complex assemblies, part configurations, and detailed 2D drawings for machined and stamped/formed components. Develop and verify parametric tooling designs against customer prints, specifications, and GD&T requirements. Prepare detailed tooling documentation, assembly instructions, and manufacturing instructions for the Machine Shop, Die Assembly, and Press Room. Identify and order tooling components, materials, and associated hardware required for manufacturing and assembly. Support engineering changes, design revisions, and tooling improvements. CAD Design & Parametric Modeling Utilize SolidWorks and AutoCAD to create, modify, and maintain engineering designs. Develop parametric models incorporating design tables, configurations, equations, and advanced assembly mates. Create complex sheet metal parts, surfaces, and multi-component tooling assemblies. Maintain accurate drawings, models, bills of materials, and engineering documentation. Verify dimensional accuracy, design intent, and manufacturability against customer requirements. CNC Programming & Manufacturing Support Generate and modify CNC programs for machining operations, including lathes, mills, EDM, Swiss-type machining, and waterjet cutting. Create, maintain, and update CNC setup sheets, tooling information, and manufacturing instructions. Support CNC programming improvements to increase machining efficiency and accuracy. Collaborate with machinists and production personnel to resolve programming and manufacturing issues. Die Development & Production Support Support stamping die development from initial design through production validation. Manufacture waterjet test blanks for tooling development and die tryouts. Perform or assist with standard operating procedure (SOP) die assembly, setup, and development activities. Evaluate tooling performance during die tryouts and recommend adjustments to achieve production-ready tooling. Troubleshoot stamping die performance, dimensional issues, and production-related tooling problems. Support die repairs, modifications, and improvements to existing tooling. Legacy Tooling & Continuous Improvement Review, troubleshoot, and update existing or legacy tooling designs and engineering documentation. Identify opportunities to improve tooling performance, reliability, manufacturability, and service life. Assist with root-cause analysis of tooling failures and recurring manufacturing issues. Support process improvements to reduce scrap, downtime, and manufacturing costs. Develop and produce 3D-printed prototypes, fixtures, and components as needed. Required Qualifications Technical Skills Proficiency in 2D CAD software, preferably AutoCAD. Proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks. Strong understanding of parametric modeling, including: Complex assemblies and part configurations Surface modeling and sheet metal design Design tables, equations, and formula-driven features Advanced assembly mates and relationships Automated drawing properties and title block information Ability to read, interpret, and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Ability to verify parametric tooling design parameters against customer drawings and specifications. Strong blueprint reading and technical drawing interpretation skills. Understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing tolerances, and material properties. Basic understanding of CNC programming, including macro programming concepts. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams. Strong mechanical aptitude, technical troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience designing progressive stamping dies, forming dies, or precision metal stamping tooling. Familiarity with CNC machining, EDM, Swiss machining, and waterjet operations. Experience developing and troubleshooting stamping dies in a job shop manufacturing environment. Knowledge of die clearances, forming operations, material behavior, and tooling design considerations. Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping. Ability to work directly with toolmakers, machinists, and press operators to resolve manufacturing challenges. Education Associate degree in Engineering Design Technology, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent education, technical training, or relevant work experience will be considered. Experience Minimum of 6 months of experience in a manufacturing environment required. Previous CAD design and drafting experience required; SolidWorks strongly preferred. Exposure to CNC programming, tooling design, and manufacturing processes preferred. Additional experience in precision metal stamping, tool and die design, or job shop manufacturing is highly desirable. Professional Skills Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate engineering documentation. Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Effective communication and collaboration with engineering, machining, tooling, and production teams. Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned engineering projects.
