Mechanical Draftsman / CAD Designer Specialty Machine Works, Inc. (SMW)
- Gulfport, MS Full-time, On-site
ABOUT SMW
Specialty Machine Works designs, machines, and fabricates industrial process equipment for industrial, energy, and aerospace customers. Our work includes ASME Code pressure vessels, shell-and-tube heat exchangers, specialty alloy components, structural fabrication, and general weld and machine shop work. We're looking for an experienced mechanical draftsman to join our engineering team and turn designs into clear, buildable drawings for our fabrication and machine shops.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Produce detail, assembly, and fabrication drawings for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, weldments, and machined parts, with all required views, sections, and dimensions.
- Apply correct weld symbols, machining symbols, tolerances, and surface finish callouts per AWS and ASME drafting practice.
- Create and check bills of material for steel and alloy construction, including plate, pipe, forgings, flanges, tubing, and hardware.
- Work with engineering, quality, and shop leads to resolve drawing questions, apply revisions, and keep drawings aligned with how parts are actually built.
- Support the transition from 2D drawings toward 3D models as the shop standard.
- Generate or support CNC programs for lathes, mills, and plasma/routing operations as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven experience as a mechanical draftsman or CAD designer in a fabrication, machining, or manufacturing setting.
- Strong command of fabrication and machine shop drawing standards: weld symbols, GD&T basics, dimensioning, and required views and assemblies.
- Ability to read and build bills of material for steel and alloy construction.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage several jobs at once.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS and/or Autodesk Inventor.
- AutoCAD proficiency (our current drawing platform).
- Drafting experience with ASME Section VIII pressure vessels and/or TEMA shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
- CNC programming experience, especially Mastercam, for up to 4-axis mills and multi-axis lathes.
- Familiarity with plate nesting software such as ProNest.
- Exposure to material specs (ASME Section II), nozzle/flange standards (B16.5), and alloys such as stainless, duplex, and titanium.
- Associate degree or technical certificate in drafting, design, or mechanical engineering technology.
