Days/Week Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Decommissioning Engineer to support facility, utility, and equipment decommissioning activities at a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. This role will plan and execute decommissioning workstreams, evaluate system dependencies, coordinate cross-functional activities, and ensure equipment and systems are safely and compliantly removed from service. Strong knowledge of facility and utility infrastructure, particularly HVAC and water systems, is highly valued.

Must-Have Skills:

5+ years of engineering experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, chemical, or other regulated manufacturing environments Strong experience with facility and utility systems , especially HVAC and water systems Working knowledge of AHUs, VAVs, VFDs, pumps, piping, electrical distribution, controls/BMS , and related infrastructure Experience with equipment/facility decommissioning, shutdowns, demolition, facility modifications, or brownfield projects Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, utility drawings, and equipment documentation Understanding of GMP, change control, engineering documentation, and safe equipment isolation Strong field coordination, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills Ability to independently manage workstreams and coordinate with multiple site functions and contractors

Key Responsibilities:

Plan and execute facility, utility, and equipment decommissioning activities Develop decommissioning plans, scopes, sequencing, and change-control documentation Evaluate equipment, utility, electrical, controls, and facility dependencies before shutdown or removal Support decommissioning of HVAC systems, AHUs, VAVs, VFDs, water systems, pumps, piping, and facility infrastructure Review P&IDs, mechanical drawings, utility drawings, and equipment documentation to understand system boundaries and interfaces Coordinate shutdown, isolation, retirement, and removal activities with Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, EHS, Quality, Validation, Manufacturing, Automation/Controls, and contractors Conduct field walkdowns and identify system conflicts, risks, and potential impacts to active operations Coordinate updates to drawings, equipment records, asset databases, maintenance systems, and other documentation Ensure work complies with site procedures, safety requirements, GMP requirements, and change-control processes Provide technical direction to site personnel, contractors, and project stakeholders Drive assigned decommissioning workstreams through planning, execution, and final closeout

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred Ability to work on-site Monday-Friday in North Chicago, IL Strong communication, coordination, and project management skills
