We design and manufacture custom final assembly tooling, including ergonomic lift assists, end effectors, fixtures, and door and instrument panel carriers. We are seeking an experienced Controls Design Engineer to take ownership of electrical and pneumatic circuit design and documentation for our custom tooling projects. The ideal candidate understands how tooling functions mechanically and can turn a mechanical concept and sequence of operations into a complete, accurate controls design package. This is an electrical and pneumatic hardware design position, not a PLC programming position. Programming experience is beneficial but is not required. Responsibilities Work closely with mechanical engineers and project managers to understand tooling function, operating sequences, and customer requirements. Design electrical and pneumatic circuits for end effectors / EOAT, ergonomic lift assists, secure tooling, and other automotive assembly equipment. Create electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and associated drawings in AutoCAD. Design circuits for gripping, clamping, lifting, rotating, locating, and releasing parts, including sensing, interlocks, and safe operating behavior. Select and size appropriate components, including valves, regulators, sensors, switches, relays, and other control devices. Review customer specifications and approved component lists to ensure designs and component selections meet project requirements. Generate accurate bills of materials with manufacturer names, part numbers, and quantities. Prepare drawing packages for customer approval, address review comments, and maintain revisions throughout the project. Coordinate with controls programmers to define operating sequences, I/O requirements, and equipment interfaces. Support shop personnel during assembly, wiring, plumbing, testing, and troubleshooting. Evaluate circuit behavior during loss of air pressure or electrical power and incorporate appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable requirements. Create operation and maintenance manuals, compile component documentation, and maintain final as-built drawings. Manage controls design deliverables across multiple projects and communicate issues that could affect build schedules. Required Qualifications Experience independently designing electrical and pneumatic circuits for custom industrial tooling or equipment. Direct design experience with end effectors, ergonomic lift assists, end-of-arm tooling, or comparable automotive assembly tooling . Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing electrical and pneumatic schematics. Ability to develop circuit designs from mechanical drawings and a sequence of operations. Experience selecting components, generating BOMs, and working with customer-approved component lists. Strong understanding of how pneumatic and electrical controls interact with mechanical tooling. Practical troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve design and build issues alongside shop personnel. Ability to take ownership of design work with limited technical supervision. Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills. A technical degree or equivalent relevant industry experience is acceptable. Demonstrated design capability and practical tooling knowledge are essential. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with automotive OEM specifications, drawing standards, and approval processes. Experience preparing operation and maintenance manuals and complete customer documentation packages. Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLC-controlled equipment and interfaces between control systems and field devices. Experience supporting equipment build, runoff, installation, or commissioning. Why Join Oxbow? Take ownership of controls design for a variety of custom automotive tooling projects. Collaborate directly with mechanical engineers and skilled shop personnel. See your designs progress from concept through assembly and testing. Join an established, family-owned company with decades of automotive tooling experience.
