Job Description

If you're an experienced Electrical Engineer who enjoys solving complex power-system challenges and taking ownership of major design projects, this is an opportunity to work on critical electrical infrastructure where your engineering decisions truly matter. We're seeking an Experienced Electrical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership across the design, analysis, modification, testing, and implementation of electrical power systems and equipment. You'll work with systems including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, motor control centers, generators, VFDs, and electrical distribution equipment , supporting complex projects from initial design through implementation and testing. What You'll Do You'll take ownership of electrical engineering work including: Develop engineering design packages, calculations, specifications, and drawings for electrical system modifications and upgrades. Perform load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and voltage drop studies . Evaluate and specify transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, MCCs, VFDs, generators, and auxiliary power equipment. Develop technical specifications and procurement documentation. Review and interpret one-line diagrams, control wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, and other plant drawings . Develop and review Engineering Change documentation, equipment database records, electrical elementary diagrams, connection diagrams, wiretabs, bills of material, and cable cards. Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and post-modification testing . Perform technical evaluations, design reviews, and engineering change assessments. Partner with project management, operations, maintenance, vendors, and other engineering disciplines. Maintain configuration control and ensure drawings, calculations, and equipment records accurately reflect completed changes. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced engineers. What We're Looking For We're looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer with approximately 10+ years of relevant engineering experience who can independently handle increasingly complex electrical design assignments. Strong experience in several of the following areas is highly desirable: Electrical power systems and distribution Power system analysis and modeling Protective relay coordination Transformer sizing and application Switchgear and circuit breaker specification Cable ampacity and routing calculations Grounding system design Electrical equipment troubleshooting Engineering modifications and configuration management Electrical equipment commissioning and testing Technical specifications and engineering reports Experience with
IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NFPA, NESC
, and other applicable electrical codes and standards is strongly valued. Experience That Will Help You Stand Out Candidates do not necessarily need to check every box. Experience in any combination of the following is valuable: Nuclear power generation Utility power systems Large industrial facilities Switchyard or transmission projects Duke Energy projects or facilities ETAP, SKM, PowerWorld, or similar power-system software Engineering Change / Standard Design Process Transformer, switchgear, relay, or generator applications Configuration management and design-basis documentation Professional Engineer (PE) license Previous Duke Energy qualifications—including Engineering Change preparation, Digital EC, Design Verification, Applicability Determination, or 50.59 screening—are highly desirable. Why This Opportunity? This isn't simply a drafting or support position. You'll be trusted to solve complex engineering problems, own technical decisions, collaborate across major projects, and help ensure critical electrical systems operate safely and reliably. For an engineer who enjoys being close to the technical work while having the independence and experience to lead it, this is an opportunity to make an immediate impact.
