This role is intended for an experienced electrical power engineer with substantial practical knowledge of substation design, grid interconnection, high-voltage and medium-voltage equipment, protection and control, electrical equipment installation, and utility operations. The position will begin as a part-time consulting engagement and will include engineering advisory work, design reviews, customer and utility discussions, and periodic visits to substations and project sites. An active Texas Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required. Responsibilities Provide senior engineering guidance for electric utility substation and grid interconnection yard design. Review electrical one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, schematics, specifications, construction documents, and installation details. Advise on the integration of new electrical equipment and control systems into both new-build and existing substations. Review high-voltage and medium-voltage equipment arrangements, electrical clearances, grounding, protection interfaces, AC/DC auxiliary systems, and installation requirements. Provide technical guidance regarding transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protection relays, instrument transformers, station service systems, DC systems, energy storage interfaces, and related substation equipment. Support engineering evaluations involving load flow, fault-current considerations, protection coordination, equipment ratings, and system reliability. Review equipment installations and construction approaches for compliance with applicable engineering practices, safety requirements, and utility standards. Participate in substation and grid-interconnection site walkthroughs, constructability reviews, equipment assessments, and customer discussions. Advise DF1 on the interface between electrical power equipment and SCADA, telemetry, protection, automation, communications, and control systems. Assist with engineering troubleshooting and root-cause evaluation of electrical system or equipment issues. Required Qualifications Active Texas Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. Extensive professional experience in electrical power engineering, substation engineering, grid interconnection, or utility engineering. Demonstrated experience with high-voltage and/or medium-voltage substations. Strong understanding of substation physical design, electrical equipment selection, installation requirements, grounding, electrical clearances, and protection interfaces. Experience reviewing electrical one-lines, schematics, equipment layouts, specifications, and construction documents. Knowledge of power-system fundamentals including fault current, load flow, protection coordination, and equipment ratings. Working knowledge of applicable IEC and IEEE standards, NESC, NEC/NFPA 70, and utility engineering practices. Ability to evaluate practical field conditions and apply sound engineering judgment to both new and existing electrical facilities. Strong technical communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers, utilities, engineers, contractors, and equipment suppliers. Willingness to travel periodically to substations and customer project sites in Texas. Highly Desirable Experience Previous experience working for an electric utility, transmission operator, grid operator, municipal utility, electric cooperative, or major utility engineering/EPC organization. Significant experience with substation protection and control systems. In-depth knowledge of SCADA, telemetry, RTUs, protective relays, communications, and substation automation. Grid-interconnection design, commissioning, startup, or construction experience. Brownfield substation modification or retrofit experience. Experience with data-center electrical infrastructure, microgrids, BESS, distributed energy resources, or advanced grid-control systems.
