Our client is currently seeking a Design Engineering Data Specialist - Power Systems for a 6 month + contract. Medical, dental, and vision insurance are available to qualified candidates who meet eligibility requirements. About the Role We are seeking a Power Systems Design Data Specialist to support the development of data-driven solutions for electrical power systems across utility-scale and industrial domains. This role sits at the intersection of power engineering expertise and data engineering practices. You will be responsible for defining how power system design data — from single-line diagrams to protection coordination studies to load flow models — should be collected, structured, and annotated so that AI systems can learn valid power engineering reasoning. You will work across transmission, distribution, substation, and facility-level power design to ensure that design intent, system behavior, and engineering rationale are faithfully captured in structured formats.
Key Responsibilities Data Protocol & Guideline Development:
Author the "style guide" for power systems data collection. Define requirements for how bus configurations, protective device settings, cable schedules, equipment ratings, and system topology should be annotated — ensuring the AI learns valid power engineering reasoning including fault current propagation, voltage regulation, and protection coordination logic.
SLD & Protection Data Evaluation:
Review and validate incoming power systems design data from tools such as ETAP, SKM/PowerTools, EasyPower, or CAPE. Assess single-line diagrams, protective device coordination studies, relay settings, and equipment schedules for completeness, internal consistency, and adherence to data collection guidelines.
Grid & System Modeling Review:
Evaluate power flow models, short-circuit studies, and stability analyses sourced from tools like PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or OpenDSS. Verify that network topology, impedance data, generation dispatch profiles, and contingency definitions are accurately captured and properly contextualized for training purposes.
Lifecycle Tracking:
Analyze the evolution of power system designs across project phases — from conceptual SLDs through detailed engineering. Identify and document the rationale behind design changes: breaker upgrades driven by revised fault duty, transformer re-sizing due to load growth, protection scheme changes following arc flash re-studies, or bus reconfigurations triggered by reliability requirements.
Synthetic Data Generation:
Script power system analysis tools or develop parametric models to generate diverse, valid power system configurations — varying system voltages, bus arrangements (single bus, double bus, ring bus, breaker-and-a-half), protection schemes, and loading scenarios to expand the training dataset.
Standards & Code Alignment:
Ensure that collected data and annotations reflect applicable codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE C37 series, IEEE 242/399/551, ANSI device numbering, IEC 61850, NERC reliability standards) so the model's learned behavior aligns with real-world engineering practice. Basic Qualifications BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering, with coursework or demonstrated depth in power systems analysis. 5+ years of experience in power systems design, analysis, or consulting — spanning at least two of: utility transmission/distribution, substation design, industrial/facility power, or generation interconnection. Deep proficiency with commercial power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower required; PSS/E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, or CAPE strongly valued). Working fluency in protection coordination, short-circuit analysis, load flow, and arc flash studies — sufficient to evaluate whether a design is technically sound and to articulate why an engineer made a particular design choice. Experience with Python or scripting to automate data extraction from power systems tools, parse relay setting files, or manipulate network models programmatically. Preferred Qualifications Experience with transmission-level planning or operations: familiarity with NERC standards (TPL, FAC, PRC), interconnection study processes, or bulk power system modeling in PSS/E or PowerWorld.
Familiarity with substation design practices:
bus arrangements, relay panel design, control and protection schematics, IEC 61850 communications architecture. Hands-on experience with protective relay configuration (SEL, GE/Alstom, ABB/Hitachi) at a level sufficient to interpret relay setting files and evaluate protection scheme logic. Understanding of power quality phenomena (harmonics, voltage sag/swell, flicker) and associated modeling or measurement practices. Familiarity with engineering ontologies, knowledge graphs, or structured reasoning frameworks — particularly as applied to infrastructure systems or engineering design rationale. Experience with utility or industrial asset management systems (GIS, OMS/DMS, CMMS) and understanding of how design data flows into operational systems. Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT/FE certification. the interaction between hardware, software, and physical systems.
