Staff Engineer - Gas and Chemical Systems Position Summary We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer - Gas and Chemical Systems to lead the engineering, construction, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of our high-purity gas and chemical distribution facilities. In this senior role, you will be deeply involved in greenfield projects , taking systems from initial design vendor collaboration through startup, operational handover, and continuous optimization. You will serve as a technical expert for critical infrastructure, including Gas Cabinets, Chemical Delivery Modules (CDMs), Valve Manifold Boxes/Panels (VMBs/VMPs), chemical control systems, and Toxic Gas Monitoring Systems (TGMS). What You Will Be DoingDesign, Construction & Commissioning Collaborate closely with design vendors to ensure all gas and chemical system requirements and specifications are met. Review engineering drawings, submittals, and field installation progress during construction. Direct commissioning activities, including equipment preparation, operational testing, and loop checks. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system abnormalities during the construction and startup phases. Manage documentation, manuals, systems databases, and formal handover processes for operations. Operations, Maintenance & Reliability Provide ongoing engineering support to ensure the safe, continuous, and reliable operation of Gas Cabinets, CDMs, VMBs, VMPs, chemical control systems, and TGMS. Partner with operations and maintenance teams to optimize equipment performance and maintain accurate operating/maintenance procedures. Apply reliability engineering principles, including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), to resolve chronic issues and prevent downtime. Conduct system evaluations and implement continuous improvement initiatives through capital and expense projects. Capacity Planning & Cross-Discipline Coordination Perform system capacity planning, shutdown planning, and expansion strategies to support scaling production demands. Coordinate effectively with adjacent facility disciplines, including Automation, Industrial Wastewater/Drains, Ultra-Pure Water (UPW), Exhaust, and Environmental Systems. Ensure all systems strictly comply with internal safety standards, local codes, and environmental regulations.
What You Must Have Education:
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (Master's degree highly preferred).
Experience:
8+ years of facilities engineering experience focused on gas and chemical system design and operations.
Greenfield Project Requirement:
Direct hands-on experience working on greenfield (new construction) projects is required. Proven experience in design, construction, commissioning, and startup is strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise:
In-depth understanding and operational knowledge of Gas Cabinets, CDMs, VMBs, VMPs, chemical control systems, and Toxic Gas Monitoring Systems (TGMS). Ability to read, interpret, and mark up complex engineering drawings, schematics, and P&IDs. Knowledge of adjacent facility systems (Automation, Drains, UPW, Exhaust, and Environmental Systems).
Professional Competencies:
Strong analytical, decision-making, and time-management skills; proficiency in MS Office and specialized engineering tools.
Certifications:
Professional Engineering (PE) License is a plus. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks in awkward positions or tight spaces. Regularly lift and adjust objects up to 50 lbs. Exposure to sharp, hot, or cold equipment in a high-purity industrial manufacturing facility.
Respirator & PPE:
Must be medically qualified to wear a respirator; comfortable climbing ladders, working at elevations, and operating in confined spaces while wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
