About the job Mechanic / Experimental Technician Seeking a highly skilled, hands-on mechanic/technician to help build, modify, troubleshoot, perfect, and maintain experimental physics setups. Excellent mechanical skills and practical problem-solving ability are essential. You should be the kind of person who can look at something that doesn't quite fit or work, figure out why, and modify, adapt, repair, or rebuild it. If you are comfortable working on car engines, machinery, or complex mechanical systems, you are probably a good fit. Ability to fabricate or machine simple parts is a huge plus. Domain-specific physics knowledge is not required; everything necessary will be taught to the right candidate.

Typical work will include:

Building, disassembling, rebuilding, and troubleshooting vacuum systems Working with reactors and mineral-oil fluid systems Cleaning, repairing, and modifying experimental hardware Mounting instruments, sensors, and detectors Working with static electricity and basic electrical systems Fabricating or adapting simple mechanical parts Executing well-defined experiments and helping rapidly improve the setups You will work closely with a PhD/Principal Investigator as his primary hands-on experimental assistant. This is fast-moving, intense experimental work. It can be highly exciting, but it also involves plenty of demanding hands-on tasks: repeated assembly and disassembly, troubleshooting, repair, modification, and cleaning as we continuously push experimental systems to their limits.

Think of it this way:

We are looking for an assistant to build the next version of the flux capacitor. That's essentially the job. Expect to get your hands dirty, occasionally get covered in oil, solve unusual mechanical problems, build things that have never been built before—and have fun doing it.

Pay:

$25.97 - $31.27 per hour
