With more than 75 years of experience supporting offshore and onshore energy projects, GIS delivers integrated services spanning traditional and renewable energy, industrial engineering, state and local infrastructure, and utility-scale solar development. Our work is driven by a strong commitment to safety, innovation, and executional excellence.
Position Summary:
GIS Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer / Pipe Stress Engineer to join our Mechanical Engineering team supporting clients throughout the petrochemical and industrial sectors. This position will focus on piping flexibility and stress analysis, pressure vessel assessments, equipment load evaluations, and fitness-for-service studies for new installations, plant modifications, and existing operating facilities. We have 2 locations, one in Metairie, LA and the other in Baton Rouge, LA. The successful candidate will apply advanced engineering principles, industry codes, and specialized analysis software to evaluate piping systems and pressure-containing equipment, identify potential design or operational concerns, and develop practical, technically sound recommendations. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and clients, this individual will help ensure the integrity, reliability, and safe operation of critical industrial systems. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical and problem-solving skills, hands-on experience with industry-standard engineering software, and the ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly while managing project scope, budgets, and schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform piping stress and flexibility analyses using
CAESAR II
to evaluate thermal expansion, sustained loads, occasional loads, displacement stresses, and other applicable design conditions. Apply ASME B31.3 and other relevant industry codes, standards, and engineering practices to assess piping system integrity and design compliance. Evaluate piping loads on static and rotating equipment, including pumps, compressors, turbines, and other connected equipment, and develop recommendations to address excessive nozzle loads and equipment interface concerns. Perform pressure vessel design evaluations and assessments using PV Elite in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), Section VIII, Division 1. Utilize NozzlePRO and other applicable analytical tools to evaluate local stresses, nozzle connections, and equipment interface loads. Conduct Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessments, including Level 1 and Level 2 evaluations, in accordance with
API 579-1/ASME
FFS-1, as applicable. Evaluate aboveground storage tanks and associated equipment in accordance with applicable API standards and project requirements. Perform field surveys and site assessments of piping systems, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and related equipment to verify existing conditions and support engineering evaluations. Review Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), piping isometrics, equipment drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation. Identify engineering deficiencies, assess potential risks, and develop practical recommendations for equipment modifications, piping rerouting, support improvements, and system reliability. Prepare detailed engineering calculations, technical reports, assessment findings, and recommendations for clients. Collaborate with piping designers, mechanical engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to develop coordinated engineering solutions. Communicate technical findings, design considerations, and recommended corrective actions to clients and project stakeholders. Manage assigned engineering activities in accordance with project scope, budget, quality requirements, and schedule. Maintain current knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, engineering methodologies, and analytical tools. Required Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. Minimum of five years of experience in pipe stress analysis, mechanical integrity, pressure equipment assessment, or a closely related engineering discipline. Demonstrated proficiency with
CAESAR II
for piping stress and flexibility analysis. Working experience with PV Elite and NozzlePRO for pressure vessel and equipment stress evaluations. Strong knowledge of ASME B31.3 and
ASME BPVC
Section VIII, Division 1. Familiarity with API 510 and API 570 inspection codes and their application to pressure vessels and piping systems. Experience interpreting P&IDs, piping isometric drawings, equipment drawings, and engineering specifications. Strong analytical, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate engineering findings and recommendations effectively to clients and multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, manage multiple projects, and meet established deadlines. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. Experience performing
API 579-1/ASME FFS-1
Fitness-for-Service assessments. Experience evaluating aboveground storage tanks in accordance with applicable API standards, including API 650 and API 653, as relevant to the project. Experience supporting petrochemical plants, refineries, chemical processing facilities, and other heavy industrial operations. Familiarity with equipment nozzle load assessments, piping support design, thermal expansion analysis, and rotating equipment interface requirements. Experience conducting field investigations and developing engineering recommendations for existing or aging industrial assets. Knowledge of industry best practices for mechanical integrity, reliability, and risk-based engineering assessments.
