Staff Accountant
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant reports to the Director of Finance and is responsible for assisting the Director in the areas of financial accounting and reporting (month end close and reporting), budgeting process, internal controls and audit requests, and special projects as designated by the Director.
Reports to: Director of Finance
Education Required
Bachelor's degree in accounting or business degree with significant accounting coursework.
Experience Required
Two to five years of accounting experience in not-for-profit or private industry.
Account and bank reconciliation experience required.
Experience in higher education or not-for-profits is preferred but not required
Proficient in Excel and Word. Experience with Business Central accounting system a plus.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Ability to work independently without supervision
Ability to lead and manage projects
Ability to analyze complex data and make recommendations
Duties
Responsible for financial grant accounting and reporting including the Perkins loan program
Maintains up to date knowledge of accounting theory and reporting requirements
Maintains banking and investment records ensuring accounts are reconciled monthly and all transactions are accounted for properly
Prepare monthly journal entries using Microsoft Dynamics (Business Central)
Assists with the preparation and review of the monthly financial statements to ensure accuracy and completeness of information, in addition to ensuring that generally accepted accounting principles are followed
Maintain detailed schedules of applicable balance sheet accounts and research and resolve any issues
Respond to and resolve inquiries regarding accounting matters
Assist in educating management and directors in regard to their monthly financial reports and how they are doing against budget
Maintain internal control and accounting process documents, ensuring that they are up to date, along with recommending internal control improvements
Assist with the maintenance of the chart of accounts in Great Plains
Serves as a finance point of contact for the Athletics department. Answers inquiries from the Athletics director and coaches. Prepare financial reports for the Athletics department. Responsible for reconciling fundraising activities for Athletics and preparing monthly reconciliation and reports for Athletics department.
Prepares assigned balance sheet reconciliations monthly and reviews with Director of Finance.
Assists in preparation of annual budgets and maintains current information on actual to budget status during the year.
Assists in preparation of all required outside reports including Federal 990, IPEDS, and any other report requests.
