work-from-home Senior Accountant This role is mostly remote. It does require the person to be local to the DC Metro area to be able to go in for meetings. CPA is required. The Senior Accountant supports the University's General Accounting Office by ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, and ensuring compliance with GAAP, University policies, and internal controls. This role oversees key accounting activities, month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, audits, and special projects while partnering with departments across the University. Key Responsibilities Manage and reconcile complex cash and balance sheet accounts. Lead and support month-end and year-end closing activities. Review financial statements, journal entries, and general ledger activity for accuracy. Identify and correct accounting discrepancies, including revenue, expense, and fund-related issues. Prepare adjusting journal entries and support accurate financial reporting. Monitor compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable regulations. Analyze financial activity and assist with process improvements, policies, and procedures. Support year-end audits and other financial reporting requirements. Provide accounting guidance, training, and problem resolution to University departments. Partner with Revenue, Student Accounts, Gift Administration, and other teams on complex transactions. Participate in financial meetings, working groups, and University-wide initiatives. Provide backup support to other General Accounting team members as needed. Requirements & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA required. 8+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, and audit experience. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial controls, and technical accounting. Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines. Strong attention to detail, judgment, and leadership skills. Experience developing financial policies, procedures, models, or reporting tools. Collaborative, service-oriented approach with the ability to work across departments. Higher education or nonprofit accounting experience is preferred.
