Job Description

General Summary The Director of Compliance is responsible for overseeing the University's compliance with federal, state, and accreditor requirements, particularly focusing on the standards of the institutional accreditor (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC)), National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), and various programmatic accreditors. This role will ensure compliance with laws such as Title IX, Title IV, Clery Act, FERPA, ADA, IPEDS reporting, and other federal regulations, supporting the institution's mission and maintaining its good standing with accrediting bodies.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Ensure policies and procedures are in compliance with institutional accreditor, NC-SARA, programmatic accreditation standards, and state and federal regulations. Ensure compliance with federal laws such as Title IX, Title IV (financial aid), FERPA (student privacy), ADA (disability accommodations), IPEDS reporting requirements, and other relevant federal and state-specific regulations for institutions operating in Maine, as well as distance education regulations. Monitor changes to regulatory environments and accreditation standards, ensuring institutional policies remain up-to-date and compliant. Ensures the University Catalog and Student Handbook is updated and published. Serves as the University's accreditation liaison; collaborates with academics in efforts related to self-study, reaffirmation, reporting substantive changes, and meeting other requirements for institutional accreditation. Monitors and guides policies and procedures to ensure that University processes related to institutional accreditation are current and accurate. Collaborates with the Institutional Effectiveness team on surveys; national benchmarking; data reports; qualitative and quantitative analyses; and research designs for the University programs and services to support institutional decision-making and mission attainment Collaborates with Academics on program planning processes for new curricula and academic programs; reviews new program proposals written by senior academic University leaders; and submits approved programs to the institutional accreditor. Oversees internal compliance audits to assess adherence to federal and state reporting and institutional and programmatic accreditor requirements. Review and submit detailed compliance reports to accrediting bodies, government agencies (federal and state), including federal IPEDS reports, and internal stakeholders, documenting findings and recommending necessary actions for compliance improvements. Ensure that all documentation for accreditation, regulatory reviews, and federal submissions is maintained and readily available for audits or inspections Provide guidance and support to departments regarding policies and responsibilities. Ensure compliance training programs are updated and provided to all faculty, staff, and administrators on laws such as Title IX, Title IV, FERPA, ADA, as well as accreditation standards and institutional policies. Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to ensure consistent application and understanding of compliance responsibilities. Conduct investigations into compliance-related issues, including potential violations of accreditation standards, state/federal laws, or institutional policies. Collaborate with legal and administrative teams to resolve compliance issues and ensure corrective action is taken. Work closely with departments such as academic affairs, admissions, financial aid, student services, and career services to ensure adherence to compliance requirements. Serve as a liaison between the institution and accrediting agencies, including ACCSC, and NC-SARA Attends committee meetings for the institution. Education and Knowledge Bachelor's degree in education, law, public policy, or a related field (Master's or JD preferred). Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in compliance, accreditation, or regulatory roles within a higher education setting. Must have experience with ACCSC institutional accreditation standards Familiarity with NC-SARA policies, Title IX, Title IV, Clery Act, FERPA, ADA, IPEDS reporting requirements, and programmatic accreditor requirements. Knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting higher education institutions, particularly in Maine.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing reports for accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and compliance management software. Ability to work independently and manage remote compliance activities.
