Commercial Insurance Underwriter

Job Description

We are looking for an Underwriter to join our team in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In this role, you will assess commercial insurance submissions, evaluate risk quality, and support agents with timely, accurate underwriting guidance. This position is well suited to someone who combines sound judgment, strong analytical ability, and a service-oriented approach to managing new and renewal business.
Responsibilities:
Assess new business submissions, renewals, and policy change requests by reviewing applications, claims history, inspection findings, and supporting underwriting documentation. Determine whether accounts align with carrier appetite and underwriting standards by analyzing exposure, class of business, and overall risk profile. Measure potential loss drivers, including catastrophe exposure, claim severity, and claim frequency, to support sound placement decisions. Calculate premiums or verify existing rating accuracy to ensure policies are priced correctly and issued in accordance with carrier requirements. Use underwriting platforms and internal tools to research account details, document decisions, and process transactions efficiently. Prepare quotes for agents, explain coverage considerations and eligibility, and respond to questions related to submissions, payments, endorsements, and cancellations. Review accounts ahead of renewal, request additional information when needed, and coordinate follow-up on inspections or recommendation letters. Build productive relationships with carriers, underwriters, agents, and internal partners to support retention, profitable growth, and cross-selling efforts. Contribute to team performance by supporting training efforts, participating in agency or market meetings when needed, and assisting with other assigned duties. High school diploma required; college coursework in business or insurance-related study is helpful, and insurance designations are a plus. Experience with commercial underwriting principles, including evaluating risk, interpreting carrier guidelines, and handling policy transactions. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain coverage and underwriting decisions clearly to agents and business partners. Solid analytical and organizational skills with close attention to detail and the ability to gather, interpret, and manage multiple sources of information. Proficiency with computer systems and underwriting technology used to review accounts, process business, and maintain accurate records. Ability to manage deadlines, work independently, and complete assignments within established procedures and service expectations. Sound judgment, conflict resolution skills, and strong interpersonal abilities that support effective collaboration and customer service. Team-oriented mindset with a focus on supporting profitability, retention, and overall business objectives.
