This one actually gives you somewhere to go with it. I'm working with an established Indianapolis accounting firm that has spent more than 25 years supporting small businesses. They work with 300+ businesses across accounting, tax, and payroll, and they've been named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana in both 2025 and 2026. They're now looking for someone to join their payroll team. You might already have payroll experience and be looking for somewhere with more room to develop, but you don't actually need to come from payroll to be considered. They're open to someone with solid professional experience who's organised, good with clients and naturally pays attention to the details. They'll teach you the payroll side and, importantly, invest in you while you learn it. The firm will pay for you to complete your Fundamental Payroll Certification, with company time to do it. From there, there's support for further qualifications such as the CPP and a natural route into more senior payroll positions. So, what will you actually be doing? You'll look after payroll for your own group of small business clients, processing everything according to their individual schedules and making sure people get paid correctly and on time. You'll prepare and reconcile period end reports, handle payroll adjustments when needed and make sure everything reaches the client by its deadline. There's a good amount of client contact too. You'll help business owners submit accurate payroll information each pay period and support them when they have questions or run into problems using the payroll platform. You'll also conduct quarterly reviews with clients, making sure they have the right service and support for what their business actually needs. As you develop, you'll support the Payroll Compliance & Tax Manager with quarterly and annual federal and state payroll tax filings. There's an experienced team around you, but you'll still have ownership of your own work and client relationships. A bachelor's degree is preferred, and they're looking for someone comfortable with technology who can manage deadlines independently and communicate well with clients. Payroll experience would obviously be useful. But they're much more interested in finding someone with the right foundations who wants to learn than insisting you've already done this exact job somewhere else. The benefits are solid too. There's medical, dental, and vision coverage, alongside a 401(k) with matching. They also hold more than 15 employee events throughout the year, including family days out. The role is based in their Indianapolis office, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. After six months, you'll have the opportunity to work from home more, but ideally, you'll be in the office to start. And there's something quite reassuring about joining a firm that's been around for 25+ years and is still growing. Client retention sits above 95%, there's a clear route to develop and they'll actually pay for you to become better qualified while you're there. You might already work in payroll and fancy a better long-term home. Or maybe payroll hasn't been your job title yet, but the work itself sounds suspiciously like something you'd be good at. Both are worth a conversation. If you're just browsing the job boards and you haven't dusted off your resume yet, that's not a problem. You can give me a call first on 312-564-5028. If you prefer, you could drop me a connection or message on LinkedIn (Lucy Weibel at Distinct), and we can pick things up there. If you've read this advert and you're unsure whether to apply because you don't have every bit of experience listed, I'd still encourage you to apply. We support the CPA firms we partner with in building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and the right attitude often goes further than ticking every box. If this position isn't quite right, it's highly likely I'll be working on another Public Accounting opportunity that is.
