Job Description

The Town of West Paris is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Assessing Agent to perform specialized administrative and technical work in the valuation of real and personal property. This is part-time position responsible for appraising residential and commercial properties to ensure all assessments remain equitable and compliant with Maine State Law and Maine Revenue Service regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administers the municipal assessment system to maintain accurate property valuations. Appraises all real and personal property, including residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and public utilities. Updates information regarding ownership changes, building permits, property tax exemptions including BETE, BETR and Current Use Programs. Determines property values by applying cost, income, and market approaches. Tracks sales information to adjust for changes in the market. Maintains cost schedules and prepares appraisal reports as required. Maintains official databases and archives and is responsible for the final valuation and commitment paperwork. Is the primary source for tax and property inquiries and maintains professional relationships with the public and real estate industry. Responsible for the defense of values to taxpayers and appeal boards.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a valid Maine Certified Assessor (CMA) designation. Qualifications include experience in property valuation, a knowledge of building construction and proficiency in Trio Web and Microsoft Office. A valid Maine Driver's License The ability to complete 16 annual credit hours of continuing education are required.
