Job Description

The Tax Team | Independent Contractor (1099) The Tax Team is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented tax professional to join our practice as an independent contractor. We are not looking for someone who simply enters numbers into tax software. We are looking for a skilled tax professional who understands tax law, can independently prepare complex returns, identify errors, review the work of other preparers, and assist with quality control and workflow coordination. The ideal candidate will have extensive tax preparation experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Responsibilities Prepare federal and state individual and business income tax returns, including complex returns. Review returns prepared by other tax professionals for accuracy, completeness, and compliance. Identify errors, missed deductions, inconsistencies, and potential tax issues. Research federal and state tax laws and resolve complicated tax situations. Provide technical guidance and assistance to other tax preparers. Assist with return workflow coordination and quality control. Communicate professionally with clients regarding tax questions and documentation. Maintain strict confidentiality and follow applicable tax preparation and data security requirements. Qualifications Significant professional tax preparation experience. Strong understanding of federal and Wisconsin income tax laws. Experience preparing Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S, and related schedules. Demonstrated ability to review and correct tax returns prepared by others. Experience with Schedule C, rental properties, depreciation, capital gains, and pass-through entities. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Experience with Drake Tax software is preferred. Current PTIN required. Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA credentials are a plus but not required. Independent Contractor Opportunity This position is structured as an independent contractor engagement rather than traditional W-2 employment. Compensation and contractual terms will be discussed with qualified candidates. We are seeking a professional who can contribute meaningful tax expertise, exercise independent judgment, and maintain high standards of accuracy and client service. Pre-Engagement Practical Skills Assessment Candidates selected for further consideration will be required to complete a practical tax preparation and review assessment before a contractor agreement is offered.
The assessment will evaluate:
Federal and Wisconsin income tax knowledge. Ability to prepare and analyze complex tax returns. Ability to identify mistakes in returns prepared by other tax professionals. Understanding of deductions, credits, depreciation, and business taxation. Accuracy, attention to detail, and professional judgment. The assessment will use hypothetical tax scenarios and intentionally incorrect sample returns. It will not involve actual client work or productive services for The Tax Team. We believe demonstrated competence is more important than credentials or years of experience alone. Application Questions Please submit your résumé and provide answers to the following questions: How many years of professional tax preparation experience do you have? Approximately how many tax returns do you prepare annually? Which types of returns do you have experience preparing (1040, 1065, 1120-S, 1120, 1041)? Have you performed second-preparer reviews or quality-control reviews? Which professional tax software programs have you used? Do you currently hold an active
PTIN, EA
designation, or CPA license? Have you supervised, trained, or provided technical guidance to other tax preparers? Are you willing to complete a practical skills assessment before being considered for a contractor engagement? About The Tax Team The Tax Team is committed to accurate, professional tax preparation and maintaining high standards of quality and integrity. We value tax professionals who take responsibility for their work, recognize problems before they become costly mistakes, and understand that quality matters more than simply completing returns quickly. If you have the knowledge, experience, and confidence to demonstrate your abilities, we encourage you to apply.
