Job Description

Job Overview We're seeking an experienced tax preparer who can independently produce accurate, complete, well-supported tax returns ready for CPA review. Our practice provides a comprehensive range of federal and state tax preparation services. We work with individuals, business owners, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, estates, nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations, and clients with complex multi-entity structures. We're looking for a strong technical preparer, not simply someone who enters information into tax software. The right candidate understands the underlying tax issues, reconciles the supporting records, and resolves routine preparation questions independently. This is a hands-on tax production role with little or no routine client contact. Responsibilities
  • Prepare individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, and fiduciary tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S, 1120, and 1041.
  • Prepare nonprofit and tax-exempt organization filings, including Form 990-series returns, as assigned.
  • Handle complex federal and multistate returns, including groups with multiple related entities.
  • Review source documents, prior-year returns, financial statements, general ledgers, K-1s, and supporting schedules provided by our team.
  • Prepare and reconcile book-to-tax adjustments, depreciation, shareholder and partner basis, distributions, and tax carryforwards.
  • Identify and resolve inconsistencies between related entities and returns.
  • Independently research routine technical issues and develop supported recommendations for matters requiring CPA judgment.
  • Review and resolve tax software diagnostics.
  • Maintain organized, traceable workpapers and complete draft returns ready for CPA review.
  • Identify missing information and communicate specific document requests or questions to teammates responsible for client follow up. Experience
  • Approximately five or more years of professional tax preparation experience, or equivalent demonstrated proficiency.
  • Strong working knowledge of individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, and fiduciary tax preparation.
  • Ability to work independently on complex returns with limited technical supervision.
  • Solid understanding of tax accounting, book-to-tax reconciliation, basis, depreciation, and carryforwards.
  • Strong research, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and meeting deadlines.
  • A valid IRS PTIN and applicable California CTEC registration or exemption.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with complex multi entity and multistate returns.
  • Experience preparing nonprofit and tax-exempt organization returns.
  • Experience with Drake Tax.
  • CPA or EA credential.
Our Quality Standard We expect completed, well-supported work, not simply a tax return with numbers entered. Before a return is submitted for CPA review, the preparer should have reconciled material amounts, investigated material discrepancies, reviewed applicable prior year information, resolved routine diagnostics, and organized the supporting workpapers. Material unresolved issues should be clearly identified with supporting research and recommended treatment. Our objective is to make CPA review a final professional quality control process rather than a second round of basic preparation. How We Work Our team uses Drake Tax, QuickBooks Online, HubSpot, and SharePoint. Other team members handle client intake, client communications, document collection, and relationship management. Your primary responsibility is technical tax preparation using the records and information they provide. The CPA retains final professional decisions, CPA review, tax advisory responsibilities, and return-release authority. We value technical competence, independent problem solving, teamwork, and consistent, high quality work. Compensation and Schedule
  • Position:
    Full-time, or Part-time, W-2 employee.
