Schedule and Attendance:
Full-Time Maintain regular attendance during standard business hours Hybrid schedule with both on-site and remote work, based on organizational needs and including occasional evenings and weekends Participation in leadership, team, board, all-staff, and one-on-one meetings Ability to attend occasional off-site meetings, organizational events, and mission-related activities Because our work centers on animal welfare, this position includes regular presence in shelter and operational environments. Candidates should be comfortable with the emotional realities of animal welfare work, including humane euthanasia and caring for animals in distress. Reliable transportation among AHS locations and occasional off-site events is required. What You'll Do Lead People & Culture Strategy Develop and lead a People & Culture strategy and prioritized roadmap aligned with AHS' mission, values, and organizational goals. Serve as a trusted advisor to the Chief Community & Culture Officer, CEO, and leadership team on workforce planning, organizational effectiveness, leadership capability, culture, and change. Translate organizational priorities into practical people strategies that balance employee experience, operational needs, compliance, and financial stewardship. Use workforce data, employee feedback, and organizational insights to identify needs, guide decisions, and measure progress. Build a Strong, Trusted People & Culture Function Lead, coach, and develop the People & Culture team, creating clear roles, accountability, decision-making practices, and ways of working. Strengthen People & Culture as an accessible, responsive, and employee-centered resource for employees and leaders. Build strong relationships across AHS through open communication, thoughtful listening, visibility, and follow-through. Partner with leaders to strengthen culture and connect the employee experience to AHS' mission, vision, and values. Lead and advance AHS' diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging priorities across People & Culture practices and the employee experience. Strengthen Talent & Organizational Effectiveness Lead workforce planning and advise leaders on staffing, organizational design, succession, capabilities, role clarity, and change. Strengthen talent acquisition and onboarding practices to create timely, clear, and consistent experiences for candidates, employees, and hiring leaders. Guide the evolution of performance management, coaching, recognition, career development, and leadership development. Help leaders build the skills and confidence to lead teams effectively and navigate complex people situations. Shape talent practices that help AHS attract, engage, develop, and retain the people needed to advance our mission. Guide People Operations & Total Rewards Ensure reliable People & Culture operations throughout the employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through development, transitions, and offboarding. Oversee compensation, benefits, payroll partnership, leave administration, employee and labor relations, policy, compliance, and records management. Strengthen policies, processes, and resources so employees and leaders have clear guidance and a consistent source of truth. Provide leadership for complex employee and labor relations matters. Improve the adoption and effectiveness of Paycor and related systems, including workflows, reporting, training, data, and employee and manager self-service. Manage the People & Culture budget, external partners, and resources responsibly. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; master's degree or professional certification preferred. At least 10 years of progressive Human Resources of People & Culture experience, including senior-level responsibility for an HR function and team. Demonstrated success strengthening a People & Culture function, foundational practices, and organizational relationships through meaningful change. Broad HR experience spanning employee and labor relations, talent, organizational effectiveness, total rewards, operations, compliance, and technology. Experience supporting a multi-site, frontline, service-oriented workforce. Nonprofit or mission-driven experience is preferred; animal welfare experience is a plus, but not required. A strategic mindset paired with the ability to translate direction into disciplined execution. An approachable, collaborative leadership style and demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility across an organization. Strong coaching and team-development skills, including the ability to clarify expectations and create accountability. Sound judgment when navigating complex employee, leadership, organizational, and change-related situations. Excellent communication, facilitation, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. Strong business and financial acumen and working knowledge of employment practices and compliance requirements.
