Description We are looking for an experienced Controller to provide interim financial leadership for a well-established nonprofit organization in Plymouth, Minnesota. This Long-term Contract position offers a hybrid schedule and is expected to support the organization on a part-time basis for approximately 20 to 30 hours per week over an initial period of 4+ months. The role is ideal for a hands-on accounting specialist who can bring structure, accuracy, and sound judgment to a complex fund accounting environment while supporting leadership with timely financial insight. This opportunity also includes helping maintain continuity during the transition to a long-term team member.
Responsibilities:
Lead the monthly close cycle, ensuring all accounting activities are completed accurately and on schedule.
Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and supporting schedules to maintain reliable financial records.
Produce financial reports for organizational leadership and the Board, delivering clear and timely information for decision-making.
Manage nonprofit fund accounting activities, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds and related reporting requirements.
Oversee accounting support for endowment activity, donation-related transactions, and other specialized nonprofit financial matters.
Contribute to annual budgeting and fiscal planning efforts by developing forecasts, analyzing trends, and supporting budget preparation.
Provide oversight for payroll processes when needed, helping ensure proper controls and accurate processing.
Strengthen accounting procedures and workflow management across recurring monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks, including coordination across financial systems and operational tracking tools.
Support a smooth handoff to a long-term team member by documenting processes and assisting with knowledge transfer and onboarding as needed. Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
Demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting, including direct work with fund accounting principles.
Strong background in month-end close, financial statement preparation, and reporting for executive leadership or governing boards.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to analyze, organize, and reconcile complex financial data.
Knowledge of restricted funds, endowment accounting, and donation-related transactions such as in-kind or contributed assets.
Ability to work independently in an interim, part-time capacity while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines in a hybrid environment.
Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge is preferred.
Additional experience with payroll oversight or capital campaign accounting is valued.
