Controller - Valencia County Hospital

Job Description

The Hospital Controller oversees all accounting operations of the hospital, including financial reporting, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, cash management, internal controls, and financial compliance. The Controller ensures financial statements are prepared accurately and timely in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), healthcare regulations, and organizational policies.
Major Responsibilities:
Financial Management Direct all hospital accounting operations. Maintain the general ledger. Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes. Prepare accurate financial statements. Ensure timely reporting to executive leadership and the Board. Analyze financial performance and identify trends. Maintain chart of accounts.
Financial Reporting Prepare:
Balance Sheet Income Statement Statement of Cash Flows Budget-to-Actual reports Departmental financial reports Productivity reports Capital expenditure reports Ensure reporting deadlines are met. Prepare supporting schedules for audits.
General Accounting Oversee:
Journal entries Reconciliations Accruals Fixed asset accounting Depreciation Intercompany transactions Inventory accounting Bank reconciliations Revenue and Expense Accounting Coordinate accounting for: Patient revenue Contractual allowances Charity care Bad debt Payroll expenses Benefits Physician compensation Grants Restricted funds
Accounts Payable Supervise:
Vendor payments Invoice processing Check runs Electronic payments Vendor reconciliation 1099 reporting Payment controls Payroll Accounting Coordinate payroll accounting by ensuring: Payroll reconciliations Payroll journal entries Benefit accruals PTO accruals Payroll tax accounting Budget Support Assist the CFO with: Annual operating budget Capital budget Department budgets Budget forecasting Variance analysis Internal Controls Assist CFO to develop and maintain internal controls over: Cash handling Purchasing Disbursements Payroll Financial reporting Asset safeguarding Segregation of duties Recommend process improvements. Audit Coordination Support CFO as accounting contact for: External financial audits Single audits (if applicable) Medicare and Medicaid cost report support Internal audits State regulatory audits Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation Regulatory Compliance Ensure compliance with: GAAP Governmental Accounting Standards (if applicable) CMS financial reporting requirements Medicare reimbursement regulations Medicaid reimbursement regulations IRS requirements for nonprofit hospitals State healthcare reporting requirements Bond covenant reporting Internal financial policies Fixed Assets Maintain accounting for: Capital assets Construction in progress Depreciation schedules Equipment acquisitions Asset disposals Capital project accounting Financial Systems Oversee accounting modules within the hospital ERP system.

Salary Range:
100,000 - 125,000 Valencia County Hospital is a new 15-bed acute care facility currently under construction in Los Lunas, NM. Owned by Valencia County and operated through a joint venture between Community Hospital Corporation (CHC) and Lovelace Health System, this startup represents a vital investment in rural healthcare and a unique opportunity to build clinical excellence from the ground up. Experience Preferred 3 years in financial management and 1-2 years in healthcare Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance. Master's Degree or CPA preferred, but not required.
