Plant Controller

Job Description

Overview We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Plant Controller to lead our financial operations at our manufacturing facility. This pivotal role combines strategic financial oversight with hands-on management of accounting functions, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and fostering operational excellence. As a key member of the leadership team, the Plant Controller will drive financial integrity, optimize cost management, and support sustainable growth through accurate reporting and insightful analysis. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the financial health of a thriving organization committed to innovation and quality. This position is fulltime, in-person, onsite in Wellsville, NY. Core Responsibilities — Job Costing & Job Profitability (Primary Mandate) Stand up a recurring job cost review cadence (weekly or biweekly, depending on job duration) that tracks actual cost-to-date against percent-complete for every open job — the single mechanism that catches overruns while a job can still be corrected. Own job cost data integrity in the ERP system: ensure labor, material, and overhead transactions are being posted to the correct job/operation in real time, not reconciled after the fact. Flag jobs trending toward margin erosion early and escalate to plant/project leadership with enough lead time to act — re-scope, adjust resourcing, or revisit other areas of impact.
Perform job close-out variance analysis:
compare actual-to-estimate for labor hours, material usage/scrap, and overhead on every completed job, and identify root cause (estimating error, execution issue, scope creep, rework). Develop and own a proper plant/factory variance/recovery variance model showing key drivers to overall factory performance - including departmental spending results on non-inventory materials, outside services/repairs and maintenance, and direct labor variances. Build a job profitability reporting view (by customer, job type, or product line) so leadership can see which categories of work and jobs are consistently profitable and which are not. Develop new, fully-loaded burden rates by work cell and product line, reflecting how overhead is actually consumed rather than a single plant-wide rate — including evaluating potential product line diversification and value stream segregation as the basis for more precise, defensible job costs. Provide guidance to Operations and Manufacturing on both labor efficiency and labor utilization production metrics, ensuring the two are defined, calculated, and interpreted consistently so they reliably connect back to job cost and margin performance. Model an accurate labor capacity profile based on available labor hours by work cell, so staffing levels can be set proactively against actual job demand rather than adjusted reactively after a shortfall or overrun is already underway. Supporting Responsibilities Understand and challenge standard costs, BOMs, and routings that underpin job estimates, in partnership with engineering and operations. Lead physical/cycle inventory counts and reconcile perpetual inventory (including WIP) to the general ledger.
Support month-end close:
WIP and job-related journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting packages. Serve as the finance business partner to plant/project leadership on job cost, budget, and forecast matters. Support internal controls and audit readiness for WIP, job cost, and revenue recognition processes. Fixed Asset Management — Compliance and Audit Perspective Maintain the fixed asset register and subledger, ensuring assets are properly tagged, capitalized, and depreciated in accordance with corporate policy. Own periodic physical verification of fixed assets on-site, reconciling floor-verified assets to book records and investigating and resolving discrepancies. Ensure proper accounting treatment for asset additions, transfers, retirements, and disposals, including timely write-off of fully depreciated, scrapped, or idle equipment. Serve as the site's primary point of contact for internal and external auditors on fixed asset testing, providing support and documentation on capitalization thresholds, useful lives, and impairment considerations. Maintain accurate replacement cost and insurable value data to support property insurance and corporate risk management requirements. Strengthen internal controls around asset custody, safeguarding, and segregation of duties for capital purchases, transfers, and disposals. Capital Expenditure (Capex) Management Partner with Engineering, Production, and Operations to build the financial case for proposed capital projects, ensuring requests are grounded in accurate cost estimates and realistic operating assumptions rather than optimistic projections. Apply the ROI methodology appropriate to each investment — payback period, NPV, and IRR for larger or discretionary projects, alongside operational metrics such as throughput improvement, yield/scrap reduction, labor savings, or energy savings — rather than a single one-size-fits-all metric. Prepare and present capital appropriation requests for site and organization approval, with assumptions clearly documented and defensible under later review. Track actual spend against approved capital budgets throughout the project lifecycle, flagging cost overruns or scope changes early enough to act on them. Conduct post-implementation autopsies on completed capital projects, comparing actual results — cost savings, throughput, quality, uptime, or other metrics used to justify the spend — against the original business case. Feed post-implementation findings back into future capital planning, so ROI assumptions become more accurate over time — the same actual-to-estimate feedback discipline proposed for job costing in the Current State section, applied to capital investment.

Oversee all aspects of plant financial management, including general ledger accounting, cost accounting analysis, and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, IFRS, and regulatory requirements. Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements. Conduct balance sheet reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable management, and cash flow forecasting to maintain optimal liquidity levels. Lead internal controls implementation and ensure compliance with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) standards as well as governmental and non-profit accounting regulations. Coordinate with external auditors during audits, providing necessary documentation for regulatory reporting and compliance reviews. Drive continuous improvement in accounting systems and spreadsheets, leveraging Excel data analysis skills for detailed financial insights. Supervise and develop the finance team, fostering a collaborative environment focused on accuracy, efficiency, and professional growth. Support budgeting processes, financial analysis, and cost control initiatives to enhance profitability and operational efficiency. Oversee treasury management activities including banking relationships, cash management strategies, and foreign currency considerations if applicable. Ensure proper payroll processing, accounts reconciliation, and adherence to technical accounting standards related to international accounting practices. Experience Proven experience in corporate accounting with a strong background in financial management within manufacturing or industrial environments. Extensive knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), SOX compliance, and governmental/non-profit accounting frameworks. Demonstrated expertise in managing accounting teams, overseeing financial close processes, balance sheet reconciliation, and account analysis. Proficiency in financial software systems such as ERP platforms or specialized accounting software; advanced Excel skills including data analysis are essential. Strong understanding of cost accounting analysis, budgeting techniques, regulatory compliance accounting, and financial report writing. Experience with international accounting standards and treasury management is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills for preparing clear financial reports and collaborating across departments; ability to interpret complex financial concepts for diverse audiences. A relevant bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred but not mandatory. Join us as a Plant Controller to lead our financial operations with energy and precision! Your expertise will help shape our future success while advancing your career in a vibrant environment dedicated to excellence in manufacturing finance management.
