Job Description

The Controller provides professional leadership for the financial administration of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The position maintains accurate and timely financial records, develops budgets and forecasts, safeguards parish assets, supports sound decision-making, and ensures that financial practices comply with applicable law, diocesan requirements, parish policies, and generally accepted accounting principles appropriate to nonprofit and church organizations. The Controller is expected to understand and support the mission, ministry, and values of St. Paul's and The Episcopal Church, bringing a service-oriented approach in collaboration with clergy, staff, lay leaders, parishioners, and volunteers. As the senior staff resource for financial matters, the Controller translates financial information into clear, useful reporting for the Rector, Wardens, Treasurer, Finance Committee, Vestry, staff, and ministry leaders. The Controller also administers payroll and employee-benefit processes and supports related personnel recordkeeping. Essential responsibilities include financial accounting and controls; budgeting, forecasting, and analysis; financial reporting and governance support; contributoins and stewardship support; payroll, benefits, and personnel administration; audit, tax, and regulatory compliance; systems, records, and risk management; and leadership and collaboration. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. At least five years of progressively responsible accounting or financial-management experience, including general-ledger accounting, budgeting, reconciliations, financial reporting, payroll, and audit support. Demonstrated understanding of internal controls, segregation of duties, restricted funds, and fund or nonprofit accounting. Advanced proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel; ability to learn church-management and contribution software. Ability to manage multiple priorities, produce high-quality work within firm timeframes, and facilitate productive conversations about financial choices. Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with strong attention to detail and deadlines. Sound judgment, discretion, and a demonstrated ability to handle sensitive financial, donor, and personnel information. Preferred CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant professional credential. Experience in a church, nonprofit, educational, or similarly complex mission-driven organization. Experience with fund accounting, endowments, investment reporting, capital campaigns, and donor-restricted gifts. Familiarity with Episcopal Church governance, canons, and financial practices, or a demonstrated willingness to learn them. Working Conditions and Schedule This is primarily an on-site office position with regular use of a computer and standard office equipment. The role requires sustained attention to detailed financial information and periodic handling of confidential records. Some evening work may be required for Finance Committee, Vestry, Budget Committee, Audit Committee, Stewardship Committee, Investment Committee, or other parish meetings, with occasional weekend responsibilities during campaigns or major parish events. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals to perform the essential functions of the position. Performance Expectations Financial records and reconciliations are complete, accurate, timely, and supported by documentation. Leadership receives understandable reports, reliable forecasts, and early notice of material financial concerns. Budgets reflect organizational priorities, realistic assumptions, responsible expense discipline, and clear ownership. Payroll, benefits, donor reporting, vendor payments, audits, and regulatory filings are completed accurately and on time. Internal controls are consistently followed, periodically reviewed, and strengthened when risks or inefficiencies are identified.
