Available Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead financial operations, accounting, and financial reporting for an established construction and mechanical contracting organization with multiple affiliated entities. This position will oversee financial management across commercial mechanical construction, fabrication, and related industrial operations. The Controller will be responsible for financial reporting, construction accounting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls. This individual will partner closely with executive leadership, Project Managers, and operational teams to monitor project profitability, improve financial performance, and support strategic business decisions. The ideal candidate will bring extensive construction industry accounting experience, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to manage complex financial operations across multiple entities. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation. Manage consolidated financial reporting, intercompany transactions, and cost allocations across affiliated entities. Analyze financial results, identify variances, and provide actionable insights to executive leadership. Develop financial dashboards, management reports, and key performance indicators. Coordinate with external accounting firms on tax preparation, audits, and financial reviews. Construction Accounting & Project Controls Oversee WIP reporting, job costing, contract accounting, and project financial reporting. Partner with Project Managers to review budgets, cost-to-complete estimates, projected final costs, and gross profit margins. Monitor project profitability, cost overruns, and gross profit fade or gain. Manage financial oversight of retainage, overbillings, underbillings, and unbilled contract amounts. Establish standardized job-cost accounting procedures and project financial review processes. Cash Flow, Budgeting & Forecasting Develop cash flow forecasts and monitor working capital, liquidity, receivables, and payables. Lead annual budgeting and periodic forecasting across companies and departments. Evaluate financial trends, operational expenses, and capital requirements. Recommend strategies to improve profitability, cash management, and cost control. Accounts Payable, Receivable & Payroll Oversight Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, project billing, and collections. Establish effective procedures for invoice approvals, expense coding, vendor payments, and account reconciliations. Monitor receivables aging, outstanding retainage, and vendor liabilities. Ensure accurate payroll accounting, labor allocations, benefit contributions, and related liabilities. Oversee financial reporting related to union labor, certified payroll, prevailing wages, and contractual labor requirements. Tax, Bonding, Insurance & Compliance Coordinate tax reporting and compliance activities with external tax professionals. Oversee sales and use tax reporting and payroll tax reconciliations. Coordinate financial reporting for surety and bonding companies, including bonding capacity assessments and renewals. Support insurance renewals, audits, and financial reporting requirements. Coordinate external audits and reviews and ensure timely resolution of findings. Internal Controls & Financial Systems Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Ensure financial data integrity and accurate reporting across accounting systems. Oversee ERP and construction accounting systems, preferably Sage Intacct. Identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows and improve operational efficiency. Standardize financial procedures and reporting practices across affiliated entities. Accounting Leadership & Executive Support Lead, develop, and supervise accounting personnel. Establish clear ownership of accounting processes, responsibilities, and performance expectations. Provide executive leadership with financial analysis, risk assessments, and strategic recommendations. Collaborate with Project Managers and operational leaders to strengthen financial accountability. Support financial planning for capital investments, business expansion, and long-term organizational growth. Required Qualifications Minimum of 10 years of Controller-level experience within the construction industry, preferably in commercial mechanical contracting or specialty trade construction. Extensive experience with construction accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, cost-to-complete forecasting, and project profitability analysis. Demonstrated expertise in multi-entity financial reporting, cash flow management, budgeting, and forecasting. Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, financial statements, and internal controls. Understanding of construction contracts, retainage, change orders, labor burden, bonding, and insurance requirements. Experience managing accounting personnel and overseeing comprehensive accounting operations. Proficiency with construction accounting or ERP systems; Sage Intacct experience preferred. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling and financial analysis. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA designation preferred but not required. Preferred Qualifications Experience with union labor, certified payroll, prevailing-wage requirements, or government contracts. Knowledge of fabrication operations, production costs, and overhead allocation. Experience working with external auditors, tax professionals, surety providers, and insurance carriers.
