Job Description
Overview:
The Laboratory General Supervisor is responsible for leading daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Molecular and Urinalysis). S/he ensures lab services are best practices with focus on patients and cost containment that are implemented in an expeditious manner. The Supervisor, assisting the Manager/Director in their duties, establishes and directs the short and long-term vision, values and goals of the laboratory. S/he manages the department's quality assurance, education, proficiency testing, competency validation, safety, laboratory information service and other administrative functions. This role supervises the Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and others as needed.
Responsibilities:
Staff Supervision Trains, leads, coaches and mentors staff to enhance employee engagement. Schedules staff and completes weekly timecard management. Responsible for hiring, monitoring, coaching, and providing disciplinary action to staff. Manages performance; performs employee evaluations and oversees staff development. Operations Evaluates, instructs, and assists in all sections of the laboratory. Monitors and reports on departmental goals and metrics. Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve issues that impact patient care delivery. Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures through conduct of daily duties. Participates in strategic decisions that affect laboratory operations. Maintains a wide base of knowledge and is capable of handling problems in areas assigned, taking and documenting corrective action as appropriate according to guidelines. Quality Management Collaborates with management team to update procedures and policies for staff. Collaborates with management team to enhance customer service activities, follow-ups, and service recovery. Responsible for Quality Assurance program for department; collaborates with Laboratory QA. Ensures department meets laboratory accreditation and licensure standards are met (State of Arizona, CAP, DNV, and other agencies). Maintains excellent patient care. Collaborates with other departments to resolve operations concerns/issues. Fulfills role of lead technologist as needed to support QA activities. Compliance/Safety Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the NAH reporting tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner. Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility. If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates. Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
Qualifications:
Education:
Medical Laboratory Technologist with Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related science field
Required Certification & Licensures:
Certification as a MLS or MT by ASCP or equivalent
Required Qualifies as a General Supervisor according to CLIA Guidelines
Required Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory managerial experience in an acute care facility
Preferred Minimum 5 years experience in Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Banking, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Serology, Immunology, and/or Microbiology

Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
