Jobs › Ayer, MA › Training Range Technician U.S Dept. of the Army - Devens RFTA Training Range Technician Ayer, MA Apply We are hiring a Training Range Technician at Devens Reserve Forces Training Area in Massachusetts. The position closes Sept 16 2026. Our range team helps military units train safely and prepare for their missions. This position supports that work through daily range operations, monitoring training activities, and coordinating support when needed. This is a full-time GS-06 position with an annual salary of \$51,429 to \$66,857. The initial term appointment is for 13 months, with the potential for extension. Duties Inspects and oversees usage of training areas by active duty and reserve components of all military services. Assists the Range Safety Officer in monitoring all firing and training activities conducted within the range Completes paperwork for issue/turn-in of equipment provided for use during exercises Operates the firing desk and maintains fire control boards/computer systems to reflect current range and training area status and activities. Provide tracking airspace utilization data and submit an annual utilization report. Coordinates medical evacuation, fire, accident, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and other emergency requests between using units and responding personnel. Notifies Devens Fire Department in case of range or brush fire. Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operators license. May be required to work beyond regular working hours, during nights and weekend hours. This is drug testing designated position (TDP). Those individuals not currently occupying a TDP position must successfully complete a pre-appointment drug test prior to being placed into this position and periodically thereafter. Employee must obtain and maintain the following requirements for each Cyber work role at the assigned proficiency level: 1) Foundational qualification requirements within 9 months, 2) Resident qualification requirements within 12 months, and 3) 20 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) per work role code (which can overlap). Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) maintaining proper control over the use of live fire training areas, restricted airspace, and/or training facilities; and 2) utilizing office automation equipment and software. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR Education:
A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as safety management, emergency management, natural resources management, recreation management, public administration, business administration, or other fields related to the position to be filled.
OR Combination of Education and Experience:
