Part-Time Direct Support / Adult Companion Seeking a calm, kind, and dependable person to provide one-on-one support to a woman in her early 50s who is non-verbal and requires significant assistance with personal care and daily living, both at home and in the community. This is a hands-on, physically active position with a significant amount of personal care and physical contact. She walks independently but needs close assistance and support throughout many daily activities. The job involves being on your feet, walking with her, bending, reaching, assisting with personal care and toileting, and remaining physically engaged throughout the shift. Applicants should be comfortable with an active, physically demanding caregiving role. Responsibilities include assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and caring for her long hair, as well as meal preparation, household tasks, activities, and community outings. She follows a specialized diet, so someone who enjoys healthy cooking and eating would be an especially good fit. Personality and fit are more important than previous experience. We are looking for someone who is calm, gentle, patient, and mild-mannered—someone who can remain composed and reassuring even when situations are challenging. At the same time, you should be attentive and observant, able to pick up on subtle cues and changes, and comfortable managing multiple things at once. You should be open to learning, receptive to training, and interested in getting to know her individual personality, routines, preferences, and ways of communicating. She enjoys nature, birds, art, fashion, books, movies, NPR, podcasts, cooking, and creative activities. Someone who shares some of these interests—or who enjoys things like putting together outfits, doing long hair, cooking healthy meals, art projects, reading, getting outdoors, and caring for plants and animals—may find lots of natural ways to connect with her. There is a medium-sized dog and two cats, one of whom is blind , as well as bird feeders that need to be kept filled and flowers that need watering during the summer. Someone who genuinely enjoys animals, birds, plants, and the everyday routines of caring for a home would be a particularly good fit.
Schedule:
Our greatest current need is for evening and overnight coverage, including Saturdays . Some daytime hours may also be available for the right person. Overnight staff must be comfortable providing intermittent toileting assistance and waking to respond to other needs that may arise during the night. This is not an overnight position where uninterrupted sleep should be expected. A good fit for this position is someone who: Is calm, kind, patient, dependable, and emotionally steady Is observant, attentive to subtle cues, and comfortable multitasking Is comfortable with a physically active, hands-on caregiving role Is comfortable providing extensive personal care, including toileting Can remain calm and reassuring during difficult situations Is comfortable supporting someone who is non-verbal and willing to learn her individual communication style Is open to learning and receptive to training and feedback Enjoys healthy cooking and can follow a specialized diet Genuinely enjoys animals, nature, and caring for plants Can work independently, take initiative, and use good judgment Is warm, creative, and genuinely interested in building a connection with the person she supports Previous experience is not necessary, and training is provided. The right temperament, willingness to learn, reliability, and genuine interest in this type of work are more important than having worked in direct care before.
