Position Summary:

The Chemical Laboratory Intern will support laboratory operations at an electroplating steel mill by assisting with chemical analysis, process monitoring, sample preparation, and testing of plating solutions and production materials. This position provides hands-on experience in industrial chemistry, quality control, and metal finishing processes while helping ensure product quality, process consistency, and compliance with company safety and environmental standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist laboratory personnel with collecting, preparing, labeling, and testing samples from electroplating lines, chemical baths, rinse tanks, and other production processes. Perform routine chemical analyses under the direction of qualified laboratory personnel, including titrations, pH measurements, concentration testing, and other approved analytical procedures. Monitor and document plating bath chemistry to help maintain appropriate chemical concentrations and process parameters. Assist with testing and analysis of nickel plating solutions and other process chemicals used in steel finishing operations, as applicable. Prepare laboratory reagents, standards, and solutions in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements. Accurately record test results, maintain laboratory records, and enter data into spreadsheets or laboratory tracking systems. Assist in identifying chemical variations or out-of-specification results and promptly communicate findings to laboratory personnel. Support quality control investigations by gathering data, reviewing test results, and assisting with root cause analysis. Assist with routine laboratory equipment checks, calibration, cleaning, and maintenance. Help maintain an organized laboratory, including proper labeling, storage, inventory, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory supplies. Follow all company policies, standard operating procedures, and applicable environmental, health, and safety requirements. Perform other laboratory and quality-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education:

Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related scientific field.

Skills and Abilities:

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection. Basic understanding of chemical laboratory procedures and safe chemical handling. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, or the ability to learn laboratory data systems. Good organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with laboratory and production personnel. Willingness to learn industrial electroplating processes and the chemistry involved in steel finishing. Safety and Work Environment Work is performed primarily in a chemical laboratory within an operating steel mill environment. May require periodic exposure to production areas, chemical processing equipment, noise, and industrial conditions. Must follow all personal protective equipment requirements and established chemical handling procedures. Must be able to safely handle laboratory chemicals and samples in accordance with training and applicable safety procedures. Must comply with company safety rules, environmental requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
