Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION
Indian Springs School District #109 One to One RN or LPN (Part Time)
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience or specialized training in tracheostomy and ventilator care. Ability to provide skilled nursing care to a medically complex student in a school setting. Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to changes in the student's medical condition, including respiratory distress or other medical emergencies.

JOB GOAL
To provide dedicated 1:1 skilled nursing care and support to a student with complex medical needs in order to maintain the student's health and safety and facilitate the student's participation in the school program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct 1:1 nursing care and health monitoring to the assigned student throughout the school day. Provide care and monitoring for the student's tracheostomy and ventilator in accordance with physician orders, the student's Individualized Health Care Plan, emergency plans, and District procedures. Provide tracheal suctioning, including closed/inline suctioning through the ventilator tubing, as medically necessary and within the nurse's scope of practice and training. Monitor the student's respiratory status, ventilator function, tracheostomy, secretions, and overall condition and promptly respond to changes in the student's health status. Recognize signs and symptoms of respiratory distress or other medical emergencies and implement the student's emergency care procedures and seek additional medical assistance when necessary. Ensure that necessary emergency equipment, medical supplies, and prescribed equipment are available and appropriately maintained for the student's school attendance. Provide or assist with urinary catheterization as medically indicated and authorized by the student's healthcare provider, parent/guardian, Individualized Health Care Plan, and District procedures. Monitor the student's nutritional intake during the school day and assist with lunch as needed to ensure adequate calorie intake for maintenance and weight gain, as directed by the student's healthcare providers and health care plan. Monitor the student's activity tolerance and fatigue level and provide or encourage appropriate rest periods between activities as needed. Support the student's safe mobility and participation throughout the school environment, including monitoring and assisting with wheelchair use as appropriate. Monitor and assist with prescribed use of adaptive and orthopedic equipment, including AFOs, splints, TLSO, wheelchair, and other equipment as identified in the student's health care plan. Maintain the student's health, safety, privacy, dignity, and independence to the greatest extent possible while providing necessary medical support. Support the student's participation in classroom activities, related services, school activities, and transitions throughout the school day while providing necessary nursing care. Communicate regularly with the student's parent/guardian, District Registered Nurse, teachers, administrators, therapists, and other appropriate personnel regarding the student's health and nursing needs. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of nursing services, medical procedures, medications/treatments, health observations, and significant changes in the student's condition. Maintain confidentiality of all student health and educational information in accordance with District policies and applicable laws. Maintain current knowledge and competency in tracheostomy care, ventilator management, suctioning, emergency procedures, and other medical procedures necessary to safely meet the student's needs. Participate in meetings, training, care conferences, and other professional development activities related to the student's medical and educational needs as requested. Assist the District Registered Nurse and school administration in developing, reviewing, and updating health and emergency care plans for the assigned student. Work collaboratively with school personnel to facilitate the student's safe access to the educational environment while recognizing that the student's medical needs require dedicated 1:1 nursing support. Perform other responsibilities as directed by the Principal, District Registered Nurse, and appropriate building/program administrator. Work days include the student's scheduled school attendance days and other days as determined by the District and student's educational program.
