The Medical Assistant supports healthcare providers in delivering high-quality patient care by performing both clinical and administrative duties. This role involves preparing patients for examinations, recording vital signs and medical histories, assisting with procedures, and ensuring exam rooms are clean and stocked. Medical Assistants may also handle scheduling, maintain patient records, coordinate communication between patients and providers, and support front-office operations as needed. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining patient confidentiality and professionalism. Strong communication skills, basic clinical knowledge, and the ability to multitask are essential for success in this role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assisting healthcare providers
Maintaining electronic health records (EHR) and coordinating patient activities
Collecting specimens for laboratory testing, administering medications and immunizations and conducting patient intake and exit interviews
Using data and patient registries to outreach to patients in need of medication refills, preventive care and follow-up for chronic conditions
Assisting with patient referrals, tracking and follow-up
As appropriate, triaging phone calls and following up on patient requests

Scheduling appointments, verifying insurance, checking patients in and out and assessing charges, including past due balances and collection of fees (e.
g. co-payment, co-insurance, point-of-care incentive)
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
General knowledge of quality improvement practices

Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate
Effective management of multiple duties and responsibilities in a clinical setting

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with racially and ethnically diverse populations, low-income populations and people experiencing homelessness
At least one year of experience in a primary care or public health setting functioning at the full extent of her/his training
Experience with Practice Management systems or EHR
Prior work in performance or quality improvement
Fluency in Spanish
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Full range of motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
Standing and walking frequently and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical setting
Some travel within western North Carolina

Pay:
$18.00 - $23.00 per hour
