Job Description

The Animal Welfare League (AWL) is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Veterinarian to join our team and serve as the head of our Medical Department. Our shelter houses an average of 150 animals, many of whom enter our care through humane investigations after suffering from cruelty, abandonment, or neglect.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including intake exams, diagnostics, treatments, and wellness care. Perform spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats, along with other surgeries as necessary. Oversee and guide the medical department to ensure the highest standard of animal care. Collaborate with shelter staff and leadership staff to support a team-oriented, positive work environment. Examine animals that may be evidence in cruelty cases; may be required to provide testimony in court proceedings. Contribute to the overall mission of AWL by supporting animal health, welfare, and community trust.
Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution. Valid veterinary license in the state of Ohio (or ability to obtain). Must be willing to obtain drug licenses in compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws. Experience in shelter medicine preferred, but not required. Skilled in spay/neuter surgical techniques. Ability to handle animals with histories of neglect, cruelty, or abandonment with compassion and professionalism. Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
Position Details:
Flexible schedule; amount of hours can be discussed based on candidate needs and needs of organization. Compensation based on experience and level of involvement.
