Registered Nurse (RN) School Bus Aide | 1:1 Transportation Nurse

Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate, experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to provide 1:1 medical support and supervision for a special needs student during transportation to and from school . The RN will accompany the student on the school bus and provide continuous observation, assessment, and nursing intervention throughout transportation. The student has significant medical needs and requires a nurse who is comfortable caring for medically fragile children and responding quickly and appropriately to changes in condition or medical emergencies. The RN will work closely with the student's family, school nursing team, transportation personnel, and other members of the student's care team to ensure safe transportation. Key Responsibilities Accompany the student on the school bus during transportation to and from school. Provide continuous 1:1 nursing observation and supervision throughout the bus ride. Monitor the student's medical status, including respiratory status, level of consciousness, positioning, comfort, and other condition-specific needs. Follow the student's Individualized Health Care Plan (IHP), Emergency Care Plan (ECP), physician orders, and school nursing protocols . Recognize changes in the student's condition and intervene promptly and appropriately. Administer medications and prescribed treatments during transportation when required and authorized. Monitor and assist with medical equipment used by the student, as applicable. Maintain familiarity with emergency medications, supplies, and equipment accompanying the student. Provide emergency nursing intervention, including CPR and other appropriate measures, if medically necessary. Communicate immediately with emergency medical services, the student's family, school personnel, and/or supervising nurse when an emergency or significant change in condition occurs. Ensure the student is safely positioned and that required medical equipment and supplies are appropriately secured and accessible during transportation. Maintain accurate documentation of nursing observations, interventions, incidents, and changes in the student's condition. Provide a safe handoff of care to authorized school staff or the student's parent/guardian at the beginning and end of transportation. Maintain the student's privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and safety at all times. Collaborate professionally with the bus driver, transportation aide, school nurse, teachers, family members, and other members of the student's care team. Qualifications Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice. Current BLS/CPR certification required. Pediatric nursing experience strongly preferred. Experience caring for medically fragile or medically complex children strongly preferred. School nursing, private-duty nursing, home care, pediatric acute care, or special-needs nursing experience is highly desirable. Experience with emergency response and recognition of changes in pediatric medical conditions. Ability to remain calm and make appropriate clinical decisions during urgent or emergency situations. Comfortable working independently while following established physician orders and individualized nursing care plans. Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills. Must be comfortable traveling on a school bus and assisting the student throughout transportation. Schedule This position generally requires availability during morning transportation to school and afternoon transportation home , following the school district calendar. Exact hours will depend on the student's transportation schedule and route. Position Purpose The primary responsibility of the RN Bus Aide is to ensure that the student can be transported safely to and from school despite significant medical needs . The nurse serves as the student's dedicated medical professional during transportation and must be prepared to assess, intervene, and respond immediately should the student's medical condition change.
