Job Description
Grow Plants. Lead People. Superior Wholesale is seeking an experienced General Manager - Nursery Production & Farm Operations to lead production and day-to-day operations at our West Olive nursery. This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced nursery professional who understands commercial plant production and the operational discipline required to manage a successful nursery. The General Manager will oversee crop production, plant health, irrigation, fertility, inventory, labor, purchasing, production scheduling, quality control and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities Lead all nursery production activities, including planting, potting, spacing, pruning, maintenance and preparation of finished stock. Develop seasonal production schedules based on sales needs, crop timing and production goals. Monitor crop health, quality and readiness and address issues proactively. Oversee fertilization, pest and disease management programs. Develop annual and seasonal production plans and coordinate purchasing of plants, containers, growing media, fertilizer and other supplies. Maintain accurate nursery inventory, oversee physical counts and reconcile inventory records. Oversee irrigation systems, wells, pumps, water distribution and related regulatory documentation. Lead, train and schedule nursery production employees and establish clear daily and weekly work plans. Hold employees accountable for productivity, quality and safety. Manage labor, material and production costs and participate in annual budgeting. Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency and increase production capacity. Ensure compliance with safety, pesticide, environmental and nursery operating requirements. Research and implement improved growing practices, technology, automation and production systems. Work closely with sales and distribution teams to coordinate inventory availability and crop readiness.
Qualifications Required:
5+ years of commercial nursery production or management experience. Strong knowledge of ornamental nursery production, including trees, shrubs and evergreens. Experience with irrigation, plant nutrition, fertilization, pest and disease management. Experience leading, training and scheduling production employees. Nursery inventory management and reconciliation experience. Ability to diagnose plant-health and production problems and implement corrective action. Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a seasonal agricultural environment. Willingness to work outdoors and participate directly in nursery operations when needed.
Preferred:
Michigan pesticide applicator credentials applicable to ornamental nursery production. Plant propagation experience. Knowledge of cold frames, irrigation systems, wells, pumps, plumbing and water distribution. Nursery budgeting, purchasing and cost-management experience. Experience with logistics, order fulfillment or wholesale nursery distribution. Experience with production-management systems, technology or automation. Schedule & Working Conditions Nursery production is seasonal and weather-dependent. This position requires flexibility during peak periods and may include early mornings or weekends when operational conditions require it. Winter months are for preparation, planning and business development. The role combines management with hands-on nursery work and requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
