Job Description

Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Step into a meaningful role supporting students as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the upcoming school year. This contract position is ideal for an experienced professional passionate about empowering young learners with visual impairments. Based near Kankakee, IL, you'll dedicate 0.2 FTE to serving four engaged students in a dynamic educational environment.
Key Qualifications:
Valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) certification or equivalent credentials Recent experience working in educational settings, particularly with school-aged children In-depth knowledge of developing and implementing individualized orientation and mobility plans Strong interpersonal skills to foster trust and communication with students, families, and educational teams Ability to adapt mobility techniques and instruction to varying abilities and learning styles Proficiency in documentation and progress reporting for students with special needs
Responsibilities:
Assess students' orientation and mobility needs and strengths Develop, implement, and monitor individualized instruction plans for each student Provide hands-on training and adapted mobility strategies to help students navigate their school and community safely Collaborate with teachers, parents, and related service providers to integrate O&M goals into educational programming Participate in IEP meetings, contributing expertise in mobility and accessibility Track and report student progress, maintaining clear and timely records This position offers the exceptional opportunity to support growth and independence in a small student caseload, allowing for personalized, consistent instruction. You will play a vital part in helping students develop crucial life skills, all while enjoying a structured and manageable part-time schedule throughout the full academic year.
