You'll work in a supportive school environment near Buda, TX, collaborating with dedicated educators and families to help students who have visual impairments navigate both the classroom and the wider world. Your specialized skills will be essential to student success, providing instruction, guidance, and encouragement as you design impactful mobility programs.
Key Qualifications:
Valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS), or eligibility for certification Experience working with children or young adults with visual impairments in educational settings preferred Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with teachers, families, and school staff Ability to develop and adapt orientation and mobility assessment plans to meet individual student needs Familiarity with assistive technology and tools to support students' independence
Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments to determine students' mobility needs and recommend appropriate interventions Design and implement individualized orientation and mobility instruction, including cane skills, spatial awareness, and safe travel techniques Provide direct instruction in a variety of school and community environments Consult with teachers and staff to ensure integrated support and accommodations in the classroom Maintain thorough records, progress notes, and documentation for each student A career as an OMS in this setting offers the chance to truly make a difference in students' lives each day.
