Drug and Alcohol Testing Technician / Medical Assistant Park Avenue Medical Group - Elmsford, New York Job Overview Park Avenue Medical Group is seeking a reliable, professional, and detail-oriented Drug and Alcohol Testing Technician to support our occupational medicine and primary care services. The technician will perform DOT and non-DOT specimen collections, breath-alcohol testing, specimen processing, electronic documentation, and general clinical support. This position requires strict attention to detail, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to maintain specimen integrity, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with employees, commercial drivers, employers, laboratories, medical providers, and third-party administrators in a fast-paced occupational health setting. Some mobile and on-site testing may be required. Primary Responsibilities Perform DOT and non-DOT urine drug-screen collections in accordance with applicable regulations, collection procedures, and company policies. Perform breath-alcohol screening and confirmation testing using an approved evidential breath-testing device when properly trained and qualified. Complete Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Forms, Alcohol Testing Forms, laboratory requisitions, and other required documentation accurately. Verify donor identification and ensure all specimens are properly labeled, sealed, documented, packaged, and prepared for transport. Maintain strict chain of custody and specimen integrity throughout the collection and shipping process. Recognize and properly respond to collection issues, including shy-bladder situations, insufficient specimens, temperature readings outside the acceptable range, suspected specimen tampering, refusals, and incomplete documentation. Perform directly observed collections when required, authorized, and appropriately trained. Enter and track testing information through electronic collection portals, laboratory systems, and office records. Communicate professionally with donors, employers, laboratories, medical review officers, designated employer representatives, and consortium/third-party administrator clients. Assist with scheduling random, pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing. Perform venipuncture and process blood specimens when ordered and when qualified to do so. Assist with basic clinical duties, vital signs, patient intake, physical examinations, and occupational health services as assigned. Maintain drug-testing kits, breath-alcohol supplies, laboratory materials, personal protective equipment, and other clinical inventory. Clean and maintain collection areas and equipment in accordance with infection-control and workplace-safety procedures. Protect confidential medical, testing, and employment information in accordance with
HIPAA, DOT
requirements, and office policies. Participate in mobile or on-site testing services at employer locations when scheduled. Perform additional administrative or clinical duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures precisely. Excellent communication, organization, and customer-service skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in sensitive situations. Comfortable using computers, electronic forms, and web-based testing portals. Ability to manage multiple collections and administrative tasks without compromising accuracy. Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally for mobile testing when required. Ability to maintain a calm and professional manner when handling difficult collections or donor concerns. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in occupational medicine, drug testing, phlebotomy, medical assisting, or specimen collection. Current DOT urine specimen collector qualification. Current Breath Alcohol Technician certification. Phlebotomy or medical-assistant training. Familiarity with DOT regulations, including 49 CFR Part 40. Experience completing custody and control forms and alcohol testing forms. Experience using electronic collection and laboratory portals. Knowledge of
HIPAA, OSHA
bloodborne-pathogen precautions, infection control, and medical terminology. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus. Training Qualified candidates who do not currently hold DOT urine collector or Breath Alcohol Technician credentials may be considered if they are willing to complete the required training and proficiency demonstrations before independently performing DOT testing. Schedule Monday through Friday. Occasional early-morning, after-hours, weekend, or mobile assignments may be required. Full-time or part-time scheduling may be available. Pay:
