Job Description

OhioHealth is seeking a dedicated Physical Therapist Assistant to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will support Physical Therapists in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care, implement treatment plans, assist with therapeutic exercises, monitor patient progress, and document outcomes accurately. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to enhance patient mobility, function, and quality of life. Responsibilities Provide direct, hands-on patient care under the supervision and direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, delivering therapeutic exercises, gait training, balance activities, and functional mobility interventions to support each patient's plan of care. Assist in implementing individualized treatment programs designed by the Physical Therapist to improve strength, range of motion, mobility, and overall functional independence for patients with a wide range of diagnoses and conditions. Safely perform patient transfers, positioning, and use of assistive devices such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs, following safe patient-handling protocols to protect both patients and staff. Monitor patient responses to treatment, including vital signs, pain levels, and functional tolerance, and promptly communicate changes or concerns to the supervising Physical Therapist and interdisciplinary care team. Document all treatments, patient progress, and clinical observations accurately and in a timely manner within the electronic medical record (EMR) in accordance with Ohio Health policies and regulatory standards. Educate patients and their families or caregivers on home exercise programs, safe mobility techniques, use of assistive devices, and strategies to support ongoing recovery and independence after discharge. Collaborate closely with Physical Therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate comprehensive, patient-centered care. Support an inclusive, compassionate care environment by treating all patients and families with respect, cultural sensitivity, and empathy, consistent with Ohio Health's mission and values. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized treatment environment, ensuring all equipment is used and stored properly, and follow established infection prevention and control practices. Participate in ongoing professional development, in-services, and competency training offered within the Ohio Health network to enhance clinical skills and stay current with evidence-based rehabilitation practices. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, documentation audits, and outcome tracking efforts to support excellence in patient care, departmental efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Demonstrate flexibility in work assignments, which may include rotating between units or care settings (such as acute care, inpatient rehab, or outpatient clinics) to meet patient and departmental needs. Required Skills Therapeutic exercise implementation Gait training and balance interventions Application of physical agents and modalities (e.g., heat, cold, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction) as delegated by the PTSafe patient handling, positioning, and transfer techniques Range of motion assessment and implementation of treatment programs designed by the PTUse of assistive devices (walkers, canes, wheelchairs) and patient education on proper use Vital signs monitoring and basic patient status observation Accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR) systems Understanding of treatment plans and goals established by the physical therapist Infection prevention and control procedures in healthcare settings Time management and caseload prioritization in a fast-paced clinical environment Interdisciplinary collaboration with nurses, physicians, and rehab team members
