Position Summary:

Physical Therapist Assistants work under licensed physical therapists (PTs) to help people with physical injuries or illnesses to regain a range of movement and control their pain. Under the PT's direction, PT assistants help people who have lost motor function due to accidents, illness or age. Physical Therapy assistants follow plans created by PTs that involve stretching, strength training, exercises and physical manipulation to help people recover. PT assistants will track progress and report to the physical therapist. In addition, PT assistants are in charge of the treatment area, making sure that it is clean, neat, and ready for each patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to project a professional image Knowledge of regulatory standards, compliance requirements and company policies and procedures Knowledge and experience in the needs of patients ranging in age from 18 to geriatric. Working knowledge and ability to apply professional standards of practice Strong organizational and analytical skills Working knowledge of computer and software applications used in job functions. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Must hold an Associate degree in physical therapy assistant from an APTA accredited college or university.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must hold a current Louisiana State License to practice physical therapy and must maintain license renewal in accordance with the applicable state licensing board.

• Current license for Occupational Therapy Assistant in state of employment

Language Skills:

English is the primary language of the facility Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of executives, managers, clients, customers, and the public

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and draw and interpret graphs

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in statistical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Additional Responsibilities:

Performs appropriate treatments under the supervision of a licensed therapist and according to recognized professional standards and ethics. Communicate to supervising therapist in a timely and accurate manner in regards to patient status. Conducts a chart review, and reviews plan of care and goals set forth by supervising physical therapist prior to treatment. Verifies critical/abnormal lab values with nursing staff prior to patient treatment. Provides thorough, accurate and timely documentation providing information on continuity of progress, and reimbursement needs as well as skilling factors for discharge planning. Documentation also includes education of use of DME for justification purposes. Attends weekly team conference, as needed. Performs chart corrections within 72 hours. Works cooperatively with supervisors, physicians, therapy and nursing staff to contribute to the overall productivity of the team. Recognizes appropriate situations to utilize support from certified nursing assistants, and therapy aid to ensure patient and employee safety. Maintains a safe environment for patient care and maintains proper safety measures with treatment when able (i.e. gait belt, chair/bed alarm) Consistently meets patient care productivity standards as established for job classification. Collaborate effectively with other members of the health care team. Provides in-service education after attending clinical continuing education seminars as assigned by the Director of Therapy. Wears proper employee identification while working on premises. Performs modalities (i.e. ice, moist heat) when appropriate. Exhibits adaptability in assignments as it relates to caseload, scheduling, and staffing. Takes the initiative to assist in other patient care areas and accepts responsibility to all patient care needs. Exhibits ethical and professional behavior and is courteous with patients, co-workers, family members, physicians and the general public at all times. Adheres to the professional standards of practice guidelines and code of ethics as set forth by the state board of physical therapy. Arrives before scheduled treatment time to conduct chart reviews. Notifies the therapy director of illness preventing him/her from attending work 2 hours prior to start time.
