Performs technical functions relating to the processing and sterilization of instruments. To provide guidance and education to the Department in regard to the process of instrumentation for NMMC. In addition, to provide guidance to other instrument technicians for daily work assignments. Planning and coordination of all activities relating to the procurement, sterilization/processing, storage and distribution of supplies and equipment needed to support patient care activities that include the operating room, OB, and Emergency Department and 8 outpatient care areas. Enforces infection control standards and practices. Coordinates in-services and the continuous training of technicians assigned to the area. Regularly attends all staff meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Responsible for decontamination/cleaning, wrapping, and sterilization of instruments and bundles for all patient care areas. a. Maintain standard precautions for decontamination. b. Monitor biological and chemical wash solutions that ensure consistent safety. c. Perform quality control checks and maintain equipment. d. Sort instrumentation and make them available for surgeons in a timely manner. e. Examine equipment meticulously to ensure they are properly sterilized. f. Verify that the equipment is working properly if defective repair or replace it. g. Prepare and package medical equipment for use of ancillary departments. 2. Assists with cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes in Endoscopy suite. 3. Operation, Maintenance, documentation of sterilization. 4. Maintains equipment inventory of all supplies needed to run the department. 5. Performs all sterilization processes for instrumentation used throughout the organization both on and off campus. 6. General knowledge of medical terminology. 7. Uses approved abbreviations for documentation.
