JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting with the safe and efficient delivery of surgical care within the Ambulatory Surgery Center. This position works closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, and other members of the surgical team to prepare the operating room, maintain the sterile field, assist during procedures, and support room turnover and daily ASC operations. The Surgical Technician is expected to demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, effective communication, attention to detail, and adherence to infection prevention and patient safety standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Must be a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician Program or previous on the job training in surgical technology required Operating room experience required Demonstrated understanding of sterilization principles required Experience in central processing functions preferred Successful completion of BLS Course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BLS certification

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work scheduled weekday shifts based on ASC procedural volume and staffing needs. Ability to participate in weekend coverage/rotation as assigned. Flexibility to accommodate changes in surgical volume, procedure times, staffing needs, and occasional early start times. Ability to provide additional coverage for staff absences, PTO, or other department needs as scheduled.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements associated with surgical procedures and room turnover. Lift, move, and position equipment and supplies as required for the position. Assist with patient positioning and movement in accordance with safe patient-handling practices. Wear required personal protective equipment. Perform duties requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling surgical instruments and maintaining sterile technique.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Surgical and Procedural Responsibilities Prepare the operating room for scheduled surgical procedures. Gather, inspect, and organize instruments, supplies, equipment, medications, and other items needed for each procedure. Set up and maintain the sterile field according to established sterile technique and infection prevention practices. Perform surgical hand antisepsis, gowning, and gloving according to facility policy. Assist physicians and other members of the surgical team during procedures by anticipating procedural needs and passing instruments and supplies. Perform surgical counts with the circulating RN according to facility policy. Assist with specimen handling and labeling in collaboration with the circulating RN. Monitor the sterile field throughout the procedure and immediately communicate any breaks in sterile technique. Assist with patient positioning and preparation as directed and within scope of practice. Ensure instruments and equipment are handled safely and appropriately throughout the procedure. Room Turnover and Instrument Processing Assist with cleaning and turnover of the operating room between procedures. Transport contaminated instruments to the designated decontamination area following appropriate infection prevention procedures. Clean, inspect, assemble, package, and prepare instruments for sterilization according to facility policies and manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs). Maintain appropriate separation of clean and contaminated items. Assist with monitoring and documentation related to sterilization and instrument processing as assigned. Ensure surgical instruments and equipment are available and ready for upcoming procedures. ASC Operations Assist with stocking and maintaining adequate levels of surgical supplies and equipment. Monitor supplies for expiration dates, package integrity, and appropriate storage. Notify the ASC Clinical Director/Manager of supply shortages, damaged equipment, or other concerns that may affect patient care. Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe surgical environment. Participate in daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning responsibilities as assigned. Assist other ASC staff with room turnover, cleaning, stocking, and other duties when needed. Participate in emergency drills and emergency response activities. Complete required logs, checklists, and documentation accurately and timely. • Other duties as assigned.

PATIENT SAFETY AND INFECTION PREVENTION

Follow Standard Precautions and established infection prevention practices. Maintain proper aseptic and sterile technique at all times. Follow facility policies regarding hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, sharps safety, exposure prevention, and environmental cleaning. Identify and immediately report patient safety concerns, breaks in sterile technique, equipment problems, medication concerns, or other potential hazards. Follow established procedures for reporting incidents, variances, and near misses. Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility policies.

Communicate respectfully and professionally with patients, physicians, anesthesia providers, coworkers, and other members of the healthcare team. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens; frequent exposure to chemical hazards; may encounter radiation hazards.
