Job Description

Novant Health is seeking a skilled Sonographer III to provide advanced diagnostic ultrasound imaging in our Healthcare & Medical Services department. In this role, you will perform and analyze complex sonographic examinations, collaborate closely with physicians, and ensure accurate, timely results to support excellent patient care. You will mentor junior sonographers, help optimize imaging protocols, and contribute to a safe, efficient clinical environment. Responsibilities Perform advanced and complex diagnostic ultrasound examinations across multiple modalities according to established protocols. Optimize image quality through proper patient positioning, equipment adjustment, and use of Doppler and other advanced techniques. Verify orders, review patient history, obtain necessary clinical information, and ensure accurate patient identification and exam documentation. Communicate effectively with radiologists and other providers, providing complete, high-quality images and relevant clinical information to support accurate interpretation. Document exams thoroughly and accurately in PACS and electronic medical record systems, ensuring timely availability of reports and images. Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for less experienced sonographers and students, providing guidance on technique, workflow, and best practices. Support training, orientation, and competency development for new staff, and assist with complex or challenging cases as needed. Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards, maintaining a clean, safe, and patient-ready imaging environment. Recognize and promptly communicate urgent or critical findings in accordance with departmental and organizational policies. Participate in quality assurance activities, protocol refinement, and process improvement initiatives to enhance imaging quality, efficiency, and patient satisfaction. Provide compassionate, patient-centered care by clearly explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and maintaining patient comfort, privacy, and dignity. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to support coordinated care and contribute to Novant Health's mission of improving health. Required Skills Diagnostic ultrasound imaging Abdominal, OB/GYN, vascular and small parts sonography Patient positioning and workflow management Image optimization and Doppler techniques PACS and EMR documentation Exam protocol development Quality assurance in imaging Radiation-free imaging safety practices Infection control and aseptic technique Collaboration with radiologists and providers Patient education and communication Mentoring and precepting junior staff Basic life support (BLS)
